Cute way of saying "high five" I think.

There were three or four kids in my year of high school who wanted an Economics elective subject. Minimum to make a new elective was about ten students, so if I'd joined them and brought another two or three, it could have happened. But my parents were lefties, and back then Economists were the enemy. I wish I'd known better, because now economics seems like required knowledge to me. At least more useful than the Chemistry and German I learned.

Anyway. I'm currently enrolled in the worst Spanish program in the history of Foreign Language Studies, and I can't switch out because it would "look bad to colleges".

Spanish is a useful language though. Ten times as many people speak it as speak German, and if you're in the States (west or south) having both English and Spanish would give you an employment advantage.

What's wrong with the course?

All that remains is to show that biological systems replicate in such a way as to satisfy the minimal criteria required for evolution to apply to them, something which has already been adequately shown time and again. At this point, we've pretty much proven that not only can evolution happen, it pretty much must happen since it's basically impossible to prevent it from happening.

My teacher speaks five languages. None of them are English.
This is Spanish II. We are supposed to be able to ask "What does that mean?"

The rest of the teachers are basically the same. Either they barely speak English or don't know how to teach. At all.

My teacher wrote five words on the board in two months.

It's just an equation that states that income (Y) is equal to Consumption (C), plus Investment (I), plus Government Spending (G) plus net exports (NX). Net exports being exports minus imports.

Consumption is equal to income minus taxes (Y-T), Investment depends on the interest rate (r*) and net exports depends on the exchange rate (e).

which is why approaching economics from biology is so fun, so many of the equations are identical, just worked out form different sources, biologists have been dealing with nutrient and energy economies for ages, and we have many more options for experiments. Ecology and physiology are experimental economics shorn of pretense.

Now, the relevant question is, why did he hate school? I can of course guess, and I'm sure you can as well.

I could throw guesses out there, but honestly they would just be flinging darts at a board. The exact reason for the feeling isn't of particular interest to me, honestly, it's more about the attitude that you don't have to do work that you hate. That's not something that resonates with most people.

Most of us realize that work doesn't care whether you like it or hate it, work just needs to get done. Your bills don't care how you feel about them. Your garbage doesn't care if you hate carrying it out to the curb. Work just needs to get done, because the alternative is worse.

That's why most of us pay our taxes, even if the act of handing over money to someone else is not something we enjoy. Sure, if I instead spent that money on a new computer then I would get immediate gratification. However, being a grown human, I have learned that scarfing down an entire bucket of ice cream may lead to immediate gratification, but then it leads to brain freeze and barfing.

That's why the short-sighted anti-tax ideology rarely gets anywhere with most people. We have this intuitive awareness that immediate gratification isn't enough, that we need to be more thoughtful and consider the long-term payoffs of actions. So when someone insists that we just stop paying for things because it's more fun to keep our money, we can easily reject that idea based on our experience of real life.

I expect YS just has never bothered to do any damned research on how many things tax dollars pay for, and all the services he and his type claim they can live without or privatize. YS seems to think that the only use of tax dollars is welfare.

96% of Americans benefit from one government program or another, and most people don't even realize it.

The denial is strong, strongest with anti-tax people of course, but most Americans just don't realize how often Uncle Sam gives them a handout.

Of course, 100% of Americans use government services, so the percentage of denial has to be high everywhere.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's inherently theft, but Capitalism certainly is a very unfair system which makes it easy for the rich to steal from and oppress the poor.

It is inherently theft. When one person has more than someone else, that is theft and exploitation. We're all entitled to equal access to the earth's resources and anyone being in need while others have excess is an act of theft.
