It's for the greater good.

If we are going to invade a country to fight terrorists we might as well do it RIGHT... and do what's necessary to not only win the war but try to smoke out the terrorists.

If you hold on this view that killing civilians can never be justified... you're just letting the terrorists win.

They'll keep using countries that harbor them to launch attacks against us until they get what they want and a ton of us are killed.

I serve in the National Guard of Latvia, in an escort/patrol company of a logistics battalion. My daily duties revolve mainly around providing security for strategic objects (basically being a security guard in an army uniform), as well as the occasional assignment to security detail in public events. Sometimes we get called upon to assist in search of missing persons or in disaster management (though the latter doesn't happen a lot here, fortunately).

In wartime, our duties would be running military checkpoints, patrolling around military bases and escorting supply convoys. I have the honour of being the machinegunner of my squad.

Granted, I've grown somewhat disillusioned about military service and my country in general, but then again, I can't think of a manlier and more honourable a job than being a soldier. Despite the shitty salary and the many absurdities of military life, at least the ladies still seem to be fond of lads in uniform, and the prestige of soldiers is still high in society.
