The Future of the American Space Program?

February 1st marks the anniversary of the Columbia disaster. (Ironically, three NASA disasters have anniversary dates that fall within the same week-wide window; the Apollo fire on January 27, Challenger on January 28 and Columbia on February 1.)

The American space program has had its moments of pride as well as horrific pitfalls. It's endured many challenges although none as great as the recent declination of support from the government, in my opinion. While privatizing seems the best choice from an economical standpoint I do feel that we are, in a fashion, turning our backs on one of our greatest potentials and regulating it to a position of "history" rather than "future promise".

There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation many never come again. But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?

We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.

Kennedy and many of his successors worked hard to sell the space program. They realized that it was a thing to take national pride in (as well as a leg up from a military aspect). I often wonder how he would feel about our current program if he were still alive today and how he would respond to America's need to "purchase space" from a foreign country in order to reach towards the stars.

The state of space research funding is just a component of the state of American science funding. As long as science gets shafted, space research will as well. Accordingly the prognosis isn't great.

there is still a huge amount of funding that goes to scientific research in the US. Honestly I am happy NASA is not getting much anymore. Early space exploration was valuable but at this point there isn't a lot of worth in it.

The greatest thing America ever did was put a man on the moon. It's the one thing that it can go "guys, look what we did" that nobody else can go "er, yeah, we, er, did that too".

Why so many Americans seem fine with turning their back on this is a mystery to me.

Even though the Space Shuttle program is finished, and men are no longer landing on the moon, the US could create something in the style of Pioneer/Voyager, make it go at the speed of light (if that's possible), and send it across the universe to look for life. It could take billions of years, but there's sure to be life on another planet, and finding it would be awesome.

Manned missions could involve going to Mars.

Hopefully they can get someone on Mars soon, or set up a Moon base in the near future. One day though humanity has to do the ultimate thing in space.


By that I mean the TP'ing of an entire planet.

Well, yes. Given that they've already been quite successful while only seriously beginning to invest in space about 10 years ago. Pretty ambitious plans for the next 15 years and they've got the money and talent to do it.

Probably, but until it happens we can't really say either way. So I guess the proper for both sides is "if they become the largest economy, they'll increase spending on their space program (hopefully)".
