Where is your morality coming from?

Postby Hiddenrun » Mon Oct 26, 2009 3:59 pm

Imagine, if you will, that it became legal to copulate with dead people. Clubs catering to this particular taste open up. (Imagine all health issues are dealt with, and that the corpses in question belonged to those were given the legal power before death to consent to this.) What would your reaction be to this practice?

I can't see any problem with it.

Though you probably mean to say: "Imagine, if you will, that it became legal to copulate with dead people"

As long as the people who own the body consent, then I wouldn't try to stop it.

(As for ownership, I'm not sure whether that means your consent before you die or the consent of the person who's in charge of your body after you're gone. For me, that'd be the issue to debate, but not that private, consensual acts should be allowed to take place.)

I'd say go for it, ifyou're into that sort of thing.

How are you planning to control the queues? It'd be a bit difficult for the corpse to say no to someone they don't fancy.

Sexual morality?

I'm way beyond the norm, therefore I can't really determine where a morality of any sort would come from.

If it was clear that all the corpses had provided uncoerced informed consent before death, then I would find it severely icky but not really immoral. The only way legality really affects it, for me, is that it's a lot harder to demonstrate uncoerced informed consent when everything is necessarily done in secret.

This is hilariously squicky, but if the, ermm... deceased gave permission I wouldn't see any ethical problems with it. But then again I tend to make decisions like that based on ethics, not morality.

I do see some concerns over how a lifeless corpse can give informed consent, unless they signed some sort of "My body is ripe for plundering" waiver before they died.

That's an interesting take on it. The illegality of the practice means that it's going to be driven underground making it difficult to ascertain consent. The legality of it is secondary to the issue of uncoerced informed consent. So your morality in this situation is based on that kind of consent, not on whether the practice is legal or not.

I would merely not join such clubs, nor would I give consent to use my corpse in that way. I'd find it disgusting... but de gustibus non est disputandum.

Semantic wiggling. Ethics are no more grounded in an absolute objective truth than morality is.

I'd be fine with it. So long as everyone is willing, doing anything should be legal.
