I've heard no one much cared about qat, as long as it was something the "Brown People" enjoyed, but now that "White People" are starting to chew the stuff, the authorities are up in arms. But who knows? I'm an American, qat is already illegal here and I've never seen it in my life, nor met anyone who's ever tried it. So maybe this is all bs.
I wonder how easy (or hard) qat is to grow? Or what penalties one might expect, for its cultivation and sale, as compared to other drugs. Nearly everyone I know would appreciate a little pick-me-up on occasion. I'm kind of curious to try this "qat". But I imagine it'll have been banned, by the time I make it across the Atlantic, if I ever do, and I don't think I want it badly enough to go to Somalia or Yemen for it.

You got it - marketing. Prohibition is a genius move - the profit increases 100 fold on the product, and you get the BBC news and gossip in newspapers and on forums to advertise it to white people for free.
