I can't remember any definition of malevolence that includes a requirement for it to be constantly acted on.

A malevolent DnD lich can chill in a cave for millenia and only wander out to upset the locals once or twice every few hundred years.

Yes. Except he's more stern, like a father. It's like he's angry at us for being an evil, evil race, but his love of humanity drowns it out.

I'm gonna raise my kids to believe Harry Potter actually exists. Not a good idea? Teaching a kid that fictional stories are real might fuck them up? Yeah you're right.

Well, if he is responsible for death, then he does exist. If he exists, Then Heaven exists, which means millions either went to There or Purgatory, with very few actually ending up in "you-know-where".

I highly doubt that the only alternative to teaching them that there is a deity for a fact (And a specific deity of the parent's choosing) is telling them that they can prove "God" doesn't exist.

Being raised in a secular household does not have to be the same as an anti-theist household similar to the ones in former East Germany and the USSR. Sort of like how secular public schools don't deal with religion unless it's a history subject involving them.

Also, a quick message to Atheists.

I new Atheism existed, but before NS I never really knew any real atheists. I knew one, and he made valid points in a calm, civilized way. Certain Atheists on NS seem to simply say "God is BS"...cough cough Mavorpen......

For some reason, NS seems to attract Atheists around the world. So I think think this is a good time to post:

Ok, saying here in the caption below the chart with lots of numbers and religions, it says that about half of the 1 billion nonreligious in the world ARE theist. They are like the Christians that go to mass on Christmas and Easter only.

That being said, only about 500 million true Atheists are on earth. Even China has a Church, and N. Korea is "Juche".

You manage to argumentum ad populum and strawman atheism in the same post, but unfortunately I can't award you points on the grounds of being long-winded and unoriginal.

Depending on who is giving the sermon and whether the counts in things like Revelation are to be believed.

Shnercropolis wrote:Yes. Except he's more stern, like a father. It's like he's angry at us for being an evil, evil race, but his love of humanity drowns it out.

Except of course stern fathers are usually a constant in their children's live. God, if one wants to consider it a parental figure, is a negligent, absent one.

We know how long humans have existed, give or take a few thousands years. Care to tell us out of our 100,000+ existence how frequently God has been in our lives? Heck, by Biblical terms human's had been without it for many tens of thousands of years before it decided to start messing around in the middle east, and then it was only affecting a tiny fragment of humans. No God being a stern yet loving father for the Australian aboriginals in the 40,000+ year isolation, or the Chinese or South Americans (unless for these you count the greeeat work missionaries did). Heck, there are still Amazonian tribes who have never heard of the bible, God, Jesus or any of it.

So, the vast majority of human existence of earth people knew nothing of God. It had a brief burst of activity a couple of thousand years ago before disappearing again. And the high light of that visit was it sending it's son to die horribly in order to save us from the terrible punishment it sentenced us to for something that didn't happen.... Father of the year and forever anyone?

And the old "we're evil! Evvvvvvil!" Never get's old, that one.

Yes the reason people believe in a God is because they were brought up believing it, population numbers mean nothing.

There's a difference: God isn't a Scientific Fact. The World being round can be proven. God is proven by Faith. Faith is belief, with proof in your heart, not the mind.

He's claimed that I've said "God is BS" three times now and has never actually quoted me seriously saying that.
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman
