From my vague Sunday School recollections, evil is just meant to be the absence of God. Since we have free will, we can choose to exist in the absence of God, but this cultivates evil. Furthermore, "God's love" would have no significance for people without the comparatively less pleasant alternative.

That's what I remember when this question was brought up. Then again, I was seven years old, so I may have botched it.

I think I have heard that before, and it is an inherently flawed justification. We have free will because god gave it to us. If free will leads to evil, then is it not the act of creating free will an evil act?

Which brings you the the inevitable conclusion: If god really is perfect, then why would he ever do anything? If are perfect, then why create a flawed universe filled with flawed creatures? It makes no sense. If god is doing things then that is because he is trying to achieve something. In other words, he is lacking something, which means that as powerful and wise as he might be, he is not perfect.
