To me, handguns seem to be much better. I would mind handguns, I'm less happy with semi-auto rifles, but I can't be too picky; and to me, the ideal hunting rifle would be bolt-action.

Bolts are more accurate.

I agree that it'd be more dangerous if use against people, but their main function would be hunting, and bolt action rifles take a bit longer to fire, meaning that there'd be less victims before the shooter can be taken down.

Although, that likely means most of those victims will be dead, surely...

There are some advantages to them though. For one, pistol grips are easier to handle than a traditional rifle.

Getting the ATF back is more important than restricting gun laws, atm.

Under normal circumstances, a mass shooting would be considered headline news.

This isn't a mass shooting, per se.

It was a kid killing his family. Mass shootings are normally perpetrated by strangers.

Well, according to the FBI, mass murder is defined as four or more murders occurring during a particular event with no cooling-off period between the murders.

I think this qualifies as one by that definition.

I prefer the standard grips myself.

I think I prefer the standard style hunting rifle (growing up, I went hunting with my dad a few times with his Browning Safari .270 and .30-06), but pistol grips are indeed easier to handle for the novice. The AR-15 style stock is also easier to handle, given it's tendency to send recoil into the shoulder, as opposed to upwards.

Speaking of which,if guns are for self defense why not make 3 round pistols ? That way mass shooters will hardly kill more than 3-6 victims before being beat down. And it works in self defense too : if you are attacked you have 3 shots to take down 3 attackers which is more than intimidating

There's currently no way that could be effectively enforced by federal law enforcement, and we've seen the way local law enforcement has responded to any sort of gun control...
