The NOI I am very hesitant to call Muslims. I mean from how I was raise Alawitism is too far removed from 'orthodox' Islam for its adherents to be called Muslims but whatever, I won't quibble with them over it, even if they believe in the divinity of Ali and such. I'll concede that they are Muslims.

The Nation of Islam however was founded by a guy in the 60s (Elijah Muhammad) who actually claimed to have met Allah in Harlem; and mostly he was, aside from being really really weird, trying to make a statement that black folks shouldn't belong to a white religion like Christianity.

Its followers weren't exactly practitioners of Islam. Malcolm X didn't even know how to pray and hadn't even bothered learning how to pray before he went on the pilgrimage.
