I fully support background checks and mental health funding, but I disagree with the "assault weapons" categorization. The exact specifications will just ban a few guns, none of which have actually seen widespread use in murder cases, for purely cosmetic reasons.

It's not like it'll make it past the NRApublicans anyway. The Second Amendment crowd doesn't need to worry until 2015, by which time Aurora and Newtown will just be sleepy little towns again.

Not letting you carry you military-grade weaponry + asking you to get through extensive mental health and background checks =/= not letting you carry guns at all

You should be ecstatic really. With all the calls from much of "the evil left" for banning guns in general, you have a president who was actually sensible enough to not blame every tragedy on all guns.

You really need an AK to defend your home from potential criminals? Surely all you need is a competent security system, a decent local police force and if you feel the need to possess a firearm then a pistol (hopefully combined with some practice) will do the job quite nicely.
