Are YOU Ready?

Postby Neo Arcad » Tue Jan 15, 2013 9:53 am

It occurs to me that, although the Mayan calendar ended a while ago, we're not really out of hot water yet. There's still quite a lot of ways that the world as we know it could come crashing to a halt, from the outlandish (zombies, alien invasions, the Second Coming) to the terrifying (meteor impacts, nuclear warfare, nuclear terrorism) to the inevitable (supervolcanoes, pandemics). So here's what I'd like to know, concerning your potential survival:

-Have you ever put any serious thought/preparation into an apocalyptic scenario?
-What manner of defenses, if any, do you have against looters, raiders, and zombies?
-How much non-perishable food do you have, in terms of time?
-Do you have any method of establishing a quarantine in the event of an NBC-compromised environment?
-What is your long-term plan, if you have one, in a situation like the ones above?

Don't forget to do the poll as well! I'll have my stuff up in a moment.

1. For sure, I'm ready. Got plenty of food and ammo. I'm not looking forward to the prospect, though.

2. I'm pretty well set as far as weapons go. I have my Colt SP2, and a Savage .22 to back it up with. Not to mention my 20ga Rossi, which could be helpful in a pinch and for hunting.

3. I have around 10-12 months worth of food, and a sizeable amount of ammo, so I'd be able to hunt and steal as well.

4. I've got a gas mask and NBC suit, but I don't think I would be able to quarantine my home.

5. Hunker down for the first few months of the disaster, whatever it may be; and subsequently, make my way to western Virginia, where I've got family. Redneck family, but family nonetheless.

I see no reason to waste time/money on planning for something that won't happen. Good luck with your little game.

I think it is better off if humans die off because eventally the earth will return to its original state. Unless you live on Guam.

Didn't that end already? First it was in 2000, then 2003, then the thing with the 11th of November 2011 at 11:11, then 21 December 2012. Now there is another one?
Well, I can say I survived the ends of the world easily, one time without realizing that that was the doomsday.

Until World War III, I plan to live my life without being scared of a new doomsday every year, thank you.

I'm going to add the Big Bacon Shortage of 2012 to my list now. That's the only one that many people really panicked about. But that ended as a fake, too.

Preparing for the apocalypse by gathering together a few materials is like trying to prevent a plane crash by rearranging the luggage compartment.

Why prepare? If the world is ending, you're going to die eventually, even if it's a natural death. I'd just accept my fate.

Well I've always wanted to be ready for a such a scenario just for the fun of it but right now I'm a student in a foreign country with economic problems (the country, not me) and I'm stuck here for the next 3 and a half years. I don't plan on staying long term and will move to a different country once I'm finished here. Also I don't have an income so I rely on my family to send money over. I have a decent gaming pc, otherwise nope, my supply is what's in my fridge and kitchen knives are my only weapons. So yea, I'd probably die.

To answer your questions in order:

1. A fair amount of thought, especially during long bus rides. Actual preparation, no.

2. My legs and ability to run fast

3. Several cases of ramen. That should last me, right?

4. Nope

5. No real plan. Survive until I don't I suppose.

Daily life has enough problems without me worrying about the hypothetical end of the world.

Nope. I only concern myself with things that hsave a marginal chance of happening.

I have a lock on my front door like anyone else. I guess there's also a random steel pipe in the laundry room I could use as a weapon.

I think there are a few cans lying around somewhere.

Neo Arcad wrote:-Do you have any method of establishing a quarantine in the event of an NBC-compromised environment?

Nope.

None. The likelyhood of such a situation happening is negligible.

-Have you ever put any serious thought/preparation into an apocalyptic scenario?

Yes.

-What manner of defenses, if any, do you have against looters, raiders, and zombies?

Walls, only, really.

-How much non-perishable food do you have, in terms of time?

Very little.

-Do you have any method of establishing a quarantine in the event of an NBC-compromised environment?

Not without support.

-What is your long-term plan, if you have one, in a situation like the ones above?

Currently, I don't have one, besides submit to the Singaporean authorities - back in Australia my apocalypse plans are more concrete, but I'm on vacation. In Australia it involves contacting friends to ascertain the chances of a united front, using the various large schools and other important community buildings as outposts which can be used to hop along the suburbs of Victoria working towards the sea and closer to the city.

A pandemic WILL happen. It's listed in the OP as inevitable for a reason. It's as unavoidable as an earthquake or other natural disaster, but it's got a much shorter timescale.

From a purely practical reason, a lot of the knowledge involved in an apocalyptic preparation also applies to general disaster prep, including becoming involved in a survival situation.

I am, of course, neither qualified to speak specifically on that, nor very much knowledgeable at all.

Absolutely correct. That was the logic behind the CDC's Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness campaign, after all. It always helps to be prepared.

On the other hand? I'm somehow glad to see that a lot of you would die. That makes my "sit tight for a few months and wait for the general population to die off" plan much more logical.

Haven't you heard of the CDC Zombie Apocalypse Campaign?

It was a stunt a while back that played off the whole zombie/bath-salts spate as a way to generate publicity around promoting disaster preparedness.

Go read up on it. It was a joke by the CDC to promote disaster preparedness under the guise of zombie preparedness. Hence why I mentioned the thing when and where I did...

I'm obsessed with the topic, but only as a sci-fi fan. I always think how it would be for that to happen. But no, in real life I wouldn't survive.
Natural disasters happen, and when one will in my area, I'll use my knowledge to survive. But zombies and the classic 2012 scenario? Sci-fi.

I see no reason to bother. If it truly is the the apocalypse we're all probably going to die and there's not much we can do about it. Why bother!?
