Hi, I'm Zoey. I'm really excited to have found this place, truly. I'm a political junkie and this is like cotton candy. But I feel like I'm just at the verge of understanding it and I haven't really gotten it yet. Should I just get about 30 hours deep into the forum, or what? How would you recommend I precede in order to discover all of the intricacies? I appreciate your kind attention.

Reading the stickies and FAQ is always a really great start, it lies down some of the most basic stuff. Like everyone said, the stickies are pretty much THE CODE to surviving here. Also, just look around, observe, and learn, join a debate, talking respectfully with others is an excellent way to see what kind of interactions are most common here on NS. Even if you don't feel like just talking yet, remember these are normal people (well, people who use normal language), so actually reading other debates can give you a feel as well (not to mention be quite informative about other views and opinions!).

Don't be afraid to ask others, especially, Moderators about your questions. Our Mods, unlike a lot of those found on the internet, are actually very down-to-Earth, friendly, and in constant contact with the average players (every Mod in fact, started out as a normal player like you and me). It might seem a little intimidating at first, but as long as you stay reasonable, they should listen and help you with whatever it is you need.

The best advice is to survive this site, is to be calm, friendly, respectful, open-minded, a little thick-skinned at times, and have a good sense of humor! :) If you can do all that, and have a love for history and politics, I can guarantee you're absolutely going to love it here.

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Welcome to NSG! After you read all the rules, then you should wade into less-controversial discussions as well as news threads before going into the hard-core controversy that can make newcomers' heads spin. If you participate in debates, then I highly recommend you view them as target-practice to gain skill in politics and debates. It is a rare occurrence that one's opinion is actually changed, this being on the internet.
