I have recently engaged in a "everything that's useful has already been said already" campaign and have just taken to quoting myself.

Hmm. That might be a fun game. See how long you can participate on NSG, if you ONLY post copies of your own previous posts. Bonus points for including the date/time stamp from the original.

And more to point, this is what us lawyers figured out a loooong time ago. Do you think I know every damned thing about every damned case that ever comes up here? Do you think the majority of the time when I post some legal vactoid on NSG I carried that particular piece of knowledge around in my head the entire time?

Knowledge, REAL useful, applicable knowledge, isn't about knowing specific things all the damned time. It's not about recalling facts, it's about knowing facts exist, and how to find them.

I went without internet for three days once. I nearly went mad. There are so many things I know, but I don't know the specifics of. It is a weird feeling to suddenly not have all the knowledge in the world available.

So far this thread has birthed "vulcan chicken" and "internet fistfucking". ANd it's only 10 pages long.

I think the only common knowledge to be gleamed from this thread is that if you get a few NSG regulars together before lunch on hump day, you'll birth some new expressions.

I love the fact that I can find out almost anything from a little device in my pocket. People I know get pissed off when I look things up on my smart phone. They'll be sitting there for three minutes arguing over which actor played the guy that died in whatever movie. I bring up IMDB and tell them who it was and they get mad.

Like they would rather argue on and on over something stupid when they could just use technology to find an answer. It's like they would rather remain ignorant.

Whatever about touting high standards for "common knowledge", nothing makes you feel smart like pointing out that something everybody knows is wrong.

My friends are the opposite. We'd be sitting around in the bar after class, and when a dispute about some fact came up, someone would be put upon to turn on their laptop and look it up. Usually me, because my laptop had the longest battery life. Smart phones are a real blessing.

I dunno, I'd say there are places in Africa poor enough that there wouldn't be schools, but rich enough for pirated copies of Titanic to be floating around. Or maybe North Korea.

Being British, I'd expect people to know key events in British history, as well as stuff I learnt in primary school, e.g. The Battle of Hastings, the reign of Henry VIII, the English Civil War. I have Asperger's Syndrome, which means I get extremely agitated if others around me don't know as much as me. I once went into a fit of rage when my History teacher couldn't spell 'independence' properly.
