Gender is a construct that exist in human society, independent of biological sex. It is based around one's identity and self-created role in society, in relation to others around them. Although a gender stereotype is often applied to you based on your biological sex, this is arbitrary and doesn't have to be the case. Every individual society has their own gender stereotypes, and sometimes they overlap. Some people, transgenders, feel that their society's construct of gender based around their does not fit them, so they perform the role of the opposite gender. This is not considered a mental illness, although many transgender people do suffer trauma from discrimination and bullying.

Are you saying that gender is a social construct and nothing more, and that trans people just want a different job? I don't agree with that. I reckon the existance of David Reimer says that being raised as a girl doesn't make you a girl if you were born a cis guy. A friend of mine is MtF but her job and hobbies are almost entirely masculine. I believe there are also brain differences in men and women that do mean they think different ways, though hell if I'm gonna dig up a link this late. (Yes, I know this post contains no evidence, but yours didn't beyond that link which doesn't completely support what you say, at first glance.)
