I'm a huge Alabama fan, and I'm really hoping we win tonight, just wanted to see everyone else's opinion on the matter

One's a US State, one's a cathedral.

Difficult to make a comparison.

Notre Dame's a fantastic building, but Alabama is near Louisiana, which has Bourbon Street. Sorry OP. I'm stumped.

Notre Dame wins. Definitely. Alabama's in the bible belt, and Notre Dame is a really old cathedral.

It is Alabama, though. Odds are there's more worth over a vast majority of potential measures in that cathedral than in the entire state.

Alabama wins, Notre Dame has had an easy season.

Also might want to include a disclaimer that this is about American College Football.

I think they reinforce the view Americans are plastic patties, founded and named by a french Priest, yet their mascot is the fighting Irish.
Seriously are Americans so dumb as to think all Catholics= Irish ?

This is an international forum. Without an explanation in the OP of what you're actually talking about (or, god forbid, posting in the threads already provided for your use that were on the first page of the forum) most of us aren't going to know that you're talking about hand-grid-egg-iron-ball.

Well, yes, but as "St Paul's Cathedral" is usually understood to refer to the St Paul's Cathedral in London (rather than, say, St Paul's Cathedral in Macau) when it's not qualified, so Notre Dame without qualification is usually understood to refer to the one in Paris.

Not when it's being talked about in the same breath as Alabama on the day of the championship game.

No in American English, in American english Notre Dame means the college football team.
since the forum is conducted in american English you better make your own British/Irish English thread. :P

American football is, in global terms, a relatively niche sport. It would be foolish to assume that everybody is going to recognise an oblique reference to it.

That stereotype depends a lot on where you're from. Where I grew up Catholics were assumed to be Italian.

While I do hate Notre Dame for their plastic paddy garbage I also hate them because I'm a Michigan fan. Also, I've run into a lot of Notre Dame students over my 3 years studying overseas and every single one of them has been a rich, entitled prick so I don't mind seeing them being taken down a peg.

Well, between a US state and a cathedral in Paris, which one do you think wins?

It depends on what I'm looking for.

Fine stonework? Notre Dame.

A religious experience? Alabama.

She's completely right though. It's a shit thread that gives no information and ought to be locked.
