Honestly, those people should not be handling fire arms. They give the ones who legitimately get them for self-defense a bad name.

You can't change the past. What's done is done, we're just trying to justify it and criminalize it between us fellows on the internet.

I think it was justified in this particular situation.

A strange man at the door violently ringing/pounding on the door, and then breaking in with a crowbar, and you have two small children in the house with you? She may not have done everything right (Like maybe answering the door), but I don't see anything bizarre about her reaction when confronted in a closet by that same stranger with her two small children and a revolver between her and the stranger with at the very least ill intentions for her livelihood.

Well I won't put her to blame, someone broke into her home. That's a threat unto itself. It wasn't like she went in guns blazing, she hid and was found. So no fault on her part for defending herself.

Either risk your life second guessing and asking moralistic questions or open fire and kill the son of a bitch that shouldn't be there in the first place. For someone in that situation, the choices are quite clear: shoot or die.

Life or death? Its just a fucking robbery. This isnt a movie where when people break into homes they are armed with assault rifles. The man had a crowbar, that was all. So either use common sense and rational thought or re-enact the scene from Taken? She did soemthing not rationally, then she opened fire on a man almost killing him. The point is that she almost killed a man with a gun. I refered to another home self-defense story where the man cut off the robber's arm. The man was robbing a house, you can do one of two things confront him with the gun pointed at him which seems entirely smart...or over react and hide and then panic fire when he reveals you because for all we know he could be a mass rapist murderer who kicks puppies.

If she really was cornered with her children in a closet (I'm assuming it was a walk-in closet) when the intruder discovered her, I don't think it would be an atmosphere conductive to calm and collected reasoning.

Speaking as someone whose been in (similar) melee situations before, using a hammer or other such item isn't a guaranteed way to force them to stop, considering that the intruder could've disarmed her easily or pinned her down.

I'm still mixed over whether she should've shot him or not, but I can see why she might be panicked to that extent, if she was cornered after retreating.

Shotguns are recommended in cases of home defense, however, as it wouldn't be near as easy to disarm, and is designed to spread out bullets at close range (typically in the stomach area), meaning she would've needed to shoot only once if she were to fire it. Her revolver would have been better suited for an outdoor scenario at longer-ranges, where accuracy mattered more.

As for not answering the door, while I do find that strange, I don't see why she would be obligated to. I do wonder though if she had a peep-hole on the door to see who it was.

This should answer some of your questions

The article describes it as a 'crawl space', which I guess must've been why some people on here kept referring to it as a closet, but I see now that she wasn't in a closet but rather her attic.

Well I don't! And so doesn't most of the United States! Most people can be overpowered, a gun makes it so anyone can stop intruders without risking their own health if there was a fight

Yeah because the intruder was definitely intent on murdering her and her children, that's why he knocked and rang the doorbell, to see if anyone was home. He assumed nobody was and broke in.

She murdered him, plain and simple, on a hunch. yay guns.

Rightly so.

Everything escallated downhill once the man came back with a crowbar to bash down her door. I believe that is the point where we head from a relatively rediculously stupid situation to fatally injure someone into something fairly justifiable.

Well, not everyone is a blackbelt. And what does having blonde hair and being black have anything to do with this?
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!
