Is an idiot, who hurts his team more than he helps his team. That idiot cannot pick his targets. He was trying to piss off Brodeur. Seriously Sean? Russia, America, Canada, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden and every other decent hockey country got the last laugh at Sean Avery for that stunt, as did millions of hockey fans Worldwide, as did Martin Brodeur. Does anyone really want to go out as a complete, total and utter embarrassment?

I never thought that I'd get to modify Rumsfeld's quote when it comes to hockey, but Avery's perfect for that:

"You retire with the legacy you have. It's not the legacy you want..."

Only a Rangers fan would think his antics are amusing.

Ummm, from a historical perspective, nope:

The Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. On November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens, in a game the NBA now regards as the first played in its history.[4] Although there had been earlier attempts at professional basketball leagues, including the American Basketball League and the NBL, the BAA was the first league to attempt to play primarily in large arenas in major cities.

Possibly. :P

Actually I think I'm just suffering from hockey deprivation. Watching a game is all well and good, but for me, it just can't compare to actually playing in one. It sucks, not having found a spring/summer league to play in. I need to make that more of a priority next year.

Oh, and the NBA doesn't hold a candle to the NHL.

Uh... I'm sorry but since when did hockey involve physical contact and aggression in three frenzied 15 minute periods?

Outright goon behavior or pest behavior is annoying, but take the physicality out fully and the NHL becomes nothing more than the NBA on skates.
And the NBA is crap, so no thanks.

Any time. :p

And you're right on the physicality aspect. Even in non-checking leagues (like professional women's hockey), you still get a lot of grinding-type plays. Just not the crushing bodychecks. A wholly non-contact hockey game would be piss poor to watch, or play.

(And hockey is three periods of twenty minutes. Not fifteen)

While I don't think I have a violence fetish like a disturbing large amount of MMA crossover fans to hockey.. I will admit a good fight is a great release. When there's context of course IE somebody got hooked or grey-area hit, or the goalie was attacked... or Rafi Torres is on the ice because that little shit needs a beatdown in every period of the game. Random "just cause" fighting on the other hand is idiotic.

I don't think guys need to go drop the gloves for things like hooks, or slashes. If a guy gets hurt, or someone throws a dirty shot, and especially if someone goes after the goalie, a fight is perfectly legitimate. Otherwise there are more appropriate ways to get back at the other team. Like scoring goals, or laying out legal (crushing) hits.

Am I? Or are you foisting unrealistic and rather contrary views on a sport yourself?

Even in the 2010 Olympics there was physical contact in hockey IE body checking and close contact, just like the IHF. So unless you're suggesting that somehow the IHF and the NHL are in cahoots to "ruin" this game played on ice that somehow isn't fast and physical, then what exactly are you suggesting?

Pretty much. I mean hooking's a shit move but it's nothing new, and like you said there's perfectly legal means of retribution IE waiting until they're not looking and board-checking them.

Again, the only exception to this rule is of course Rafi Torres. I still maintain that little shit needs a beating in every period of the game on principle.

I'm suggesting its 20 minutes, not 15.
Uh huh... I had a brain cramp, forgive me.
