Nat: Night's always in some bizarre state somewhere between "intoxicated enough to kill a hair metal lead singer" and "annoying Mormon missionary sober".
Swith: It's because you're so awesome. God himself refreshes the screen before he types just to see if Nightkill has written anything while he was off somewhere else.

You must be joking, or you visit some very strange forums. Not everyone trolls.

To utilize a personal example, the area I live in is so one-sided in the political spectrum that any discussion on things remotely related to politics usually comes down to "I agree with you SO much!" back-slapping and opinion reinforcement. Rarely is there a challenge, and if so it's so minute as to be pretty benign. NSG isn't like that. At all. Hell, you can find someone on here who'll challenge just about anything.
Now, the effects this discussion between people with actual varied opinions has is another matter. One could easily say that the vast majority of us haven't had our opinions changed to a large degree by discussions on here, but that seems to miss the point. There is no denying that a vast majority of people on here have had to refine their opinions in some manner, even if they don't change them, in order to account for and cope with new information or arguments brought to light through this discussion. To come back to a personal example, abortion used to be a near anathema topic to me whatsoever (which wasn't affected by my Catholic upbringing at all, nosiree) but when idly reading through the myriad of abortion threads that have come up on here that has changed a good bit precisely because of the actual arguments presented here (in many cases) rather than the "You hate babies!" "You hate women!" back and forth that seems to make up the media's discussion on the topic. I was forced to actually consider things about a topic that the entirety of my position consisted of "'dis is bad".
So yes, I would say there is a level of importance to these discussions beyond mere time-consuming entertainment.

Yeah, on here you can find just about anyone - fascists, anarchists, communists, and, of course, the liberals and conservatives. And all of them disagree with each other and themselves.

What is the purpose of posting on NSG? Is it just to waste time? Is there no other purpose than to hit random characters on the keyboard until you find something else to waste time with? Are there any secondary effects to posting on NSG? Or may we as well stare at a wall until it's time to head off to something more interesting in our lives?
Forgive my poor OPs, I've never been particularly good at starting conversations.
Personal amusement
