I thoroughly believe that it has helped me, mainly for reasons. First, I used the rp's I was involved in to help me when I was cramming for my creative writing project, since the teacher was a nightmare and wanted us to write a 10 page short story by the next class. I hated that class.
The other time it's really helped me-- and this is recurring-- is that on here, I get to say "This is what I believe" and not feel like the people I see every day are going to judge me for it. I live in an area where everyone is either radical right or radical left, and moderates like myself get labeled as one or the other whether we like it or not. I like how, on here, the community is diverse enough that we're all able to express our own beliefs with a general sense of acceptance among the community.

I got into a debate once about Hitler and Stalin during History class. I used what I learned from NS, and completely wrecked house in the debate.

NS has been good for me in terms of giving me a political outlet and introducing me to some interesting perspectives.

Isn't there some psychological theory that syas when you meat someone of oppsing views and argue with them you will most likely leave more radical then you entered?

That's certaintly happened to me before.

In some ways, this.
In other, non-NSG-ish ways, the MMW thread in F&NI gave me more knowledge on firearms and firearms technology than I ever would have been able to gather on my own. In the old F7, Nana's Bistros and whatnot gave me some fun times and memories. And in the chat threads of NSG all the way back to the very first What Have You Learned Today thread, I made friends and actually got to discuss non-ideological stuff with people who have different perspectives.
So yeah, NS has helped me.
On the other hand, it has damaged me a couple of times, but that's not really something to discuss now, is it?

Well... I've procrastinated a LOT on NS...

That said, both my writing and debating skills have come on a good way since I've re-started playing NS this summer so yeah, it's not all bad.

It has helped me occasionally be more careful with how I put forward my arguments and observations. But mostly it has provided mental and emotional therapy through banter, riposte, and roleplay.

Considering that I am quite new to the forums, it hasn't helped me nearly as much as many of you, but I agree with the majority of you in the sense that it allows me to see many, many differing opinions on government and historical subjects (among others, of course).

I mean, most of my closer friends have relatively the same ideology as me, so there is not much debating there. And, of course, most people do not want to debate in a public environment.

I, at least, look forward to what NSG will do to me.

Now I have participated in Gun control debates on NS before and since most of NS is left of me on the political spectrum, it allows me to look at different sides of the argument. I did something similar when I was writing a 20 page Honors Chem paper on Nuclear Energy. I searched up a thread on Nuclear Energy and started reading what people had to say as I had run out of ideas. Though to broaden this beyond a purely academic standpoint, NS has also helped me become more light-hearted and has drawn me closer to my faith. I also feel a lot more educated about issues of philosophy, economics, and politics. It allows me to get all my debate out of my system and allows me to be a normal teenager with my friends. Then again, I get into debates on here with people that get me riled up and sometimes I procrastinate for hours on here instead of doing my homework. So my question to you NS, is has NS ever helped you? has NS ever been detrimental to you? do you have friends and or someone special who you met or know on NS? (I know four friends from school that are active on NS)

I do not want this to turn into a debate about issues, I just am curious as to what Max Barry's little creation has done to us.

NS is the reason I consider myself an semi-expert in chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. :p

Lot of indirect stuff actually, since I had to do research for realistic and accurate RPing.

I'm a semi-expert in nuclear weapons because I had to do a lot of research, because I used to be super-paranoid (especially regarding China, North Korea, and Iran). Actually, the research helped me to get over that paranoia, once I realized that the only country that could actually do anything was China. And after reading somebody's post on here about how since most of China's income comes from the US, they wouldn't dare attack us, even my paranoia about China has subsided.

The research certainly helped remove any misconceptions I had about such weapons. Of course this means any Hollywood film involving these weapons will no longer be seen the same. I can barely watch a movie involving military hardware, tactics/strategies and weapons without criticizing all the inaccuracies.

Try being an aspiring aerospace engineer and astrophysicist, having researched nuclear weaponry, and then watching Armageddon. Seriously. I did it once, and it felt like I was in Mystery Science Theater 3000.

In short, I had a fucking field day.

It has, in its own way. Yes, there's a lot of meh going on, but I think I have met truly awesome people and formed a few friendships that will probably last a lifetime. Also, NS brought me into contact with the man I completely adore and who has taught me that I'm not a broken person.

It has helped me quite massively in the past.

It's been a place where I could come and not only explain my own opinions (thereby examining them and understanding them better myself), but have them challenged and sometimes overthrown. It has provided me with many different angles on just about any interesting or even boring subject under the sun.

And last but not least, thanks to the good Christians in NSG, I turned atheist.
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."
