What sort of jackass would propagate obvious bullshit conspiracy theories just for fun?

I was thinking more of trying to get some action under the playful excuse of it being the end of the world. You might want to have a go at it.

Some people take an interest in it even if its bullshit. Hence why we have active websites dedicated to conspiracy theories.

Would it necessarily be at midnight? The Mayans said that the world would end on the 21st, but they didnt specify when. Maybe we're all going to wait for midnight, cheer when it doesnt happen and then get wiped out by the apocolypse that happens at ten minutes past!

You should look at definition of "morally superior" because last time I checked stating facts doesn't come within those boundaries.

No, that's why I wait till midnight of 21st. Then its 22nd and if world ends, we can sue Mayans. :p

Would we sue them for false advertising because they said the world was going to end and it didn't, or for threats to kill because they said we were all going to die?

For false advertising, threat to kill, fraud, anti-social behaviour, causing social panic...
and if it ends after midnight on 21st, also for genocide, violation of Geneva convention, deliberately causing civilian casualty, attacking without declaration of war and not taking suffice action to warn civilian about potential casualty.

To be fair, even if the Mayan calender specifically said it was Friday, 21st December, 2012 - with a sub-note predicting calender switches, I still wouldn't be particularly worried. I mean, it's not the interpretation of a myth I'm doubting here.

Having said that, I'm more than happy to avoid a bunch of responsibilities through it - 'look, I certainly could give you a comprehensive budget breakdown for next year's forecast but given the imminent end of the world, is there any point?'

I should point out that between us and the Mayans we counted differently so therefore 21st December will be the equivalent of our new millennium back in 2000, or 2001 according to some.

I am absolutely certain that bar the problems we face everyday, the world will not end physically on the 21st December. I can confidently bet $1 gazillionbajillionshubidoodidoo that the planet will not get hit by a massive comet.

I'm writing a confessions/apologies list to be posted on my facebook on the fateful day. Laughs and gasps are likely to be heard for miles.

I don't honestly believe that the world will end, but the joke justification allows for some pretty funny stuff to slip past.

This is exactly what's going on. It's really funny. It's exactly like someone going on and on about why "vulcans" can't exist at a star trek convention. No one there ACTUALLY believes that vulcans exist (with perhaps a handful of exceptions). They just want to have fun with an idea.

I've heard about this doomsday scam for way too long. I can't wait for the day to finally pass just to see the egg on people's faces who were so sure the world would end. How people can put any faith into a barbaric human-sacrificing tribe from the stone age is beyond me.
