I don't see how it is, he argued that if we put weapons in classrooms then people in those rooms can defend themselves.

this is a person that had weapons, and it didn't help.

She was shot four times in her sleep by her son. It doesn't sound like a likely school classroom scenario.

To be fair, if I lived in a country where mass shootings were becoming commonplace, I'd be wanting an arsenal of weaponry, too.
And (not to jump on you but since the door was opened), would you be willing to drill and train with your personal arsenal every single day? To familiarize yourself with not only the foibles of your weapons but also your natural shooting position and how to compensate for arm drift, heart-rate, breathing, sweat dripping in your eyes and a hundred other things that interfere with accuracy under pressure when shooting?

Now ask yourself this; if you're willing, how many people aren't and just want the weapon because it will make them feel safe? What happens when they're suddenly confronted with a psychopath, draws, and fires, and ends up not only wounding the deranged maniac but also killing a child in an adjacent home when they empty the cylinder or magazine in less than a second due to panic fire?

Now repeat that scenario a thousand times over and that's just the start of the price of arming everyone without any sort of standards in place.

Exactly. My jerk reaction, when confronted by sensationaised and (seemingly) increasingly commonplace mass shootings, and threats of mass shootings, would be to arm myself to the teeth. Not necessarily because I think they would be effective protection, but because of the feeling of safety and security.

This obviously isn't an earth-shattering point. Just that I can understand the desire.

And if that's not bad enough, if one of the kids on the receiving end is prone to epileptic seizures or has asthma, then that taser or pepper spray wielded on a little body like that can have suddenly fatal results.

And then the school gets sued, teacher gets fired, outraged parents demand tasers and pepper sprays removed, lather rinse repeat.

Why would the safe be open in the first place, unless there is an incident or during training?

yes, presumably beacause you realise that you'd sound batshit crazy if you were actually suggesting that guns be kept in all classrooms at all times. guns of course being more effective at stopping assailants than LtL (tasers might drop someone more readily but reload slower ) but we both know who is most likely to get tasered.

Because school districts can afford handguns as well as training for every single teacher. And let's pretend that there's no such thing as a teacher with issues, or kids who'll be tempted to find a way to get a hold of those handguns.

It would be open, ex potentia, because people are in general screwups. Sooner or later somebody is going to make a mistake, and thats human nature. The issue is human mistakes with harmful or lethal devices around children tend to be exacerbated in a hurry because children, as is their nature, are inquisitive. Those two facets of human nature combined with those devices is a recipe for disaster in some fashion.
