There's more to life than being a mindless cog in an inhumane system. One of the main goals of education ought to be to help the students develop their critical thinking skills. Reading good fiction helps the more intuitive, non-linear aspects of the mind develop.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a whole lot more useful to a kid than a dissertation entitled Racism Really Sucked, Especially During the Depression.

To be fair, the problem is that that symbolism oftentimes/sometimes gets taken to ridiculous extremes wherein either
A) Every word on the page is somehow supposed to be symbolic of a totally "meta" existential statement the author is trying to get across. The author would never write a mundane thing like "He walked through the door." he must mean that the subject of the piece was [blah blah blah] when the author meant "He walked through the fuckin' door!"

Speaking as someone who not only did studies of English fiction and poetry in my compulsory English class, but who went out of his way to take an in-depth literature course in high school, I really can't say this has ever happened to me.

B) The symbolism is subjective to each teacher and we merely teach kids how to parrot what teach thinks the story is about in order to get a good grade.

Speak for yourself. My teachers actually taught the material in question properly.
