What's the big deal? America has no culture to speak of, and what we do call "culture" is like an invasive plant species overseas, wiping out indigenous cultures around the world.

Are you joking?

I know it's hard to see through most of the crap, but deep down, we actually do have a good, and genuine American culture.

If you've never learned anything from reading a work of fiction, that's a flaw in your own intelligence, not any one else's.

God forbid we teach children about the single most important form of art in human history.

When we could be teaching them about useful stuff which achieves same primary goals as teaching them fiction plus its well usefulness.

What is point of having stuff that is not real in class when you could achieve same aims while teaching something that is. If:
A gives benefits xyz.
B gives benefits wxyz.
Logical choice is B.

And you think that choosing to teach fiction or non-fiction is that simple? Sounds like bollocks to me, but then, I had to read To Kill A Mockingbird.

As I said, there is no problem with fiction, its also literature, but we should balance it and regulate it

There's more to life than being a mindless cog in an inhumane system. One of the main goals of education ought to be to help the students develop their critical thinking skills. Reading good fiction helps the more intuitive, non-linear aspects of the mind develop.

Except that often non-fiction falls horribly short of accomplishing the things fiction does.
Animal Farm is a lot more effective than a pamphlet entitled The History of the Early Soviet Union.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a whole lot more useful to a kid than a dissertation entitled Racism Really Sucked, Especially During the Depression.

I like non-fiction. But insulation, plant species? History at least, something which meant something and something interesting.

I'd rather read about the life of Arthur Wellesy than bloody insulation. Fiction is useful too, many great books are.

The author would never write a mundane thing like "He walked through the door." he must mean that the subject of the piece was [blah blah blah] when the author meant "He walked through the fuckin' door!"

Speaking as someone who not only did studies of English fiction and poetry in my compulsory English class, but who went out of his way to take an in-depth literature course in high school, I really can't say this has ever happened to me.

You would present a more convincing argument against teaching fiction if you could construct a sentence properly.
