Well, speak about the origin of any of those names, then.

I thought it was more Greek in origin. But of course, Greece influenced Egypt quite a bit.

And the other way round! Ptolemaic Egypt is a very late period in Classical egyptian history, and it would be foolish to assume that culture doesn't go both ways, and that more traditionally egyptian beliefs didn't shape Greek civilisation, which turned up later. >>

Now that I think about it, that makes sense--the "-polis" suffix and such--but I first learned the term (Heliopolis) in relation to Egypt.

And @Jordaxia: Ja.

@CI: Yes it did. Greece ruled Egypt for a bit.

My countries name came about when me and a friend were trying to think of a REALLY REALLY COOOL country name.
All we came up with were:
The State of TheRapists
The Rogue Nation of Poop
The Federation of CrudNudists
etc more immatureness etc

So we made some guidelines: Include colour, include animal, not been done before
After many moneths of blood sweat and tears, we had found a pencil. Then we started thinking.
After 5 mins we came up with, by which time we were bored and it was the end of Physics:

THE EMPIRE OF THE IVORY EAGLE!!!

C'est bon, n'est pas? *glares with the look that if you don't agree you'll be hung drawn and quatered before you can say 'dammit.'*

Actually that's debatable. Both cultures are quite ancient, but I seem to have read somewhere... *browses* that Greece is perhaps older than Egypt. Lemme double-check that.

I'd be genuinely surprised if it was, given spread of populations, the awesomeness of the nile delta for setting up a civilisation, the sheer ancientness of any recogniseable egyptian culture, etc, but hey. I'm not infallible regarding my historical knowledge. I'm interested to know which came first now as a distinct culture, given what I know of greek culture is like 1000BC-200bc (give or take a century or few)

Greece only became the way we recognize it after Egypt...

I started my nation after reading a thread about NS on another board.

I chose my name to be a portmanteau of my handle on the other board and the suffix "stan."

The city of Helios. Isn't Helios another term used for earth?

Helios is the sun. Heliopolis was the Greek name for an Egyptian city that was known for sun worship.

The Hellenic civilization (the actual Greek civilization of the Iliad, Athens, Sparta, etc.) was several thousand years younger than the Egyptian civilization, which is not much younger than the Sumerians. The Minoan civilization, on the other hand, may have been as old as any other on earth, but was obliterated by a volcanic eruption. It has speculated that it may be "Atlantis." The Hellenes finally finished off its remnants when they came into Greece off the steppe.

As for my name, I just make shit up sometimes. It's the name of an alien quasi-greek city-state I invented long before discovering NationStates. The link is in my signature.

No, Nanatsu! You don't want the origins of my nation's name but my previous nation's name, as I'm only using South Lorenya because my previous nation, Lorenya, had been abandoned for a looong time!

Along long time ago (1997, I think) I needed a bunch of fantasy sounding place names for a fanfic, so I started mashing letters together. One of them (Lorenya) I liked enough that I used it in other places as well.
