Should the United States intervene in Syria

Postby Equestrian Democratic Republic » Wed Dec 05, 2012 10:43 am

I have been hearing a lot of talk lately on both NSG and other forums in which some people said that the U.S. should intervene in the Syrian Civil War to support the rebels. Personally I am against the idea because I feel that the United States shouldn't be intervening and acting like the world police. The world slammed the U.S. for the Afghanistan War, Libyan Civil War, Iraq War, and etc so I feel that is best that the United States doesn't intervene in Syria because all it would accomplish is cause more anti-america bashing and people calling the U.S. imperialist. But what are your thoughts?

Whilst I am opposed to the United States intervening in Syria, I am not opposed to intervention in Syria. I merely think it is more tangible for the United Kingdom and France to work in Syria rather than the US due to their positions both geographically and that they, like the US, are members of NATO.

No, the USA are not world police. The UN should make the decision.

I've been thinking about organizing a PMC to go blat-blat on some Syrian dictator hide, but that costs too much money.

No one wanted you to take up the mantle of the world police. Your nation decided it would do it itself.

Anyway no i do not believe that the US should intervene, nor any other nation unless the UN requests it.

No. Interventionism is a waste of money and lives. It did no good in Iraq or Afghanistan, and there's no reason to expect that to change.

Maybe the US ought to intervene. After all the UN is good for nothing and other NATO members are too weak to actually do something about Syria.

Although, sometimes it's maybe for the best to let the Syrians sort their problems out by themselves. That way no one in Syria would complain, that current status is forced on them from the outside.

It did some good (at first), but then lots and lots of bad.

If the US (or NATO) was to intervene in Syria, I think the public is owed a very definite battle plan, well defined and honest political objectives, and a sound exit strategy.

Since my cynicism tells me that won't happen, I voted no.

No Canada should intervene! Make it our fourth territory - or better yet make Nunavut our eleventh province and Syria our new third territory! GLORY TO THE HARPER GOVERNMENT OF CANADA!!!1111ONEONEONE

On a more serious note it should be an international effort with the US taking a backseat to avoid the typical anti-Americanism that normally happens when they get involved with this kind of stuff.

If they do, Russia and China should counteract there. Syria should be defended to death.

Okay you got me there on that, for a time maybe it was needed for a balancing force, but there was no need for the US to continue this role anymore.

No. The situation is not as simple as some would believe, and the presence of the United States would not improve it.

More importantly, there's nothing shameful in not getting bogged down in yet another 3rd world conflict that will only get our troops needlessly killed, waste money and piss people off. Indeed, I consider having intervened in Iraq and Afghanistan a very deep source of shame, as an American.

No one asked the US to assume the mantle of global policeman, and I'm opposed to my nation going into Syria. However, me might do it anyway, since it seems all any other country but Turkey, including ours, has done since all this violence began is idly fret on what course of action to take.

Like I said, I want the U.S to stay out of Syria. If nothing else, it might be interesting to see how bad things will get before another nation decides to take action.

We are in a period of time of warfare, where it matters on the hyperstate to decided. The United States is the most powerful country in the world, and will need to exert more control over the Middle East to have it remain peaceful, because no one is as powerful as the United States. It will sooner or later intervene, much to my distaste.

Saying that the US got literally dragged into World War I is kind of a stretch. The US could have avoided the war if it wanted. Sure, that Mexican-German telegram was shocking stuff (shockingly stupid on the German's part), but Mexico was clearly no threat to anyone at the time, save for border spillage from the insurgent warfare.

Anyway, the US's expansion plans would've led to further meddling eventually. The US had already been screwing around in East Asia for twenty years by the time of World War I.
