custer's defeat.

dr king's march.

ghandi's salt march. (and india's independence)

b.a.r.t., amtrak, and capital corridor.

the interurban in japan that was saved by making biscuits, and another by a cat.

and all the odd little corners where the good guys have occasionally won.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

I think we risk becoming the best informed society that has ever died of ignorance. ~Reuben Blades

I got quite annoyed after the Haiti earthquake. A baby was taken from the wreckage and people said it was a miracle. It would have been a miracle had God stopped the earthquake. More wonderful was that a load of evolved monkeys got together to save the life of a child that wasn't theirs. ~Terry Pratchett

In my lifetime? The fall of the Berlin wall.
And the Good Friday agreement.

Other than that, the moon landing.

Those would be the biggest I can think of, though there are tons and tons of smaller ones. Every little and large medical breakthrough, every little law to protect animals and the environment, every pease treaty that actually results in peace...
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

I think Laika and Yuri Gargarin are getting a bit short changed here. The conversion of Ashoka to Buddhism, Edward Jenner's work, or Norman Borlaug's, or the decoding of the human genome are all good moments.

I am going to go for the launch of Voyager missions.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

The siege and suicide at Masada might be worth a mention. So too might be Napoleon's march from Antibes to Paris following his escape from Elba.

Also, Alexander Peresvet fighting the Tatar warrior in the single combat before Dmitri Donskoy's victory in the Battle of Kulikovo. Begone, ye Mongol Yoke! Well, at least it got that process rolling (and infighting within the Golden Horde did just as much, I suppose)

The invention of the can. Without it, nation's wouldn't have had the ability to put large armies on the field in close confines. This then happened in WW1, and the extensive casualties caused the downfall of most of the European powers, starting a chain of events that has lasted until the present day.

For my money, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The Jewish fighters all knew that it was doomed from the start - they were weak, and sick, and outnumbered, and armed with homemade weapons. And they fought anyway, because - in the end - they knew that the only choice left was to die on their feet instead of on their knees. "The meat insurgent, the meat defiant, the meat fighting! The meat in full cry!" To my eyes, it doesn't get any more tragic, or any more inspiring, than that.

That's a clever way to discredit legitimate concerns regarding the 'moon landing'; loony-by-association.

No, I don't believe in any of those nor was it my intention to debate here - I just think it is incredible that even with all the information now available to us that people are still gullible enough to believe in the governments version of events - and feel "inspired" by it. Ugh.

OK, why don't you make a thread with your 'information' and convince us all the Moon Landings were fake?
