The highlands? Modern-day Scotland was occupied by the Picts, and with regards to the Normans, there's this thing called interbreeding.
The picts are as British as anyone from that time. Briton reffers to someone living on the British Isles

Wrong. The Picts were distinct both racially and culturally from the Britons.
See here and here.
And Briton doesn't refer to someone who lived on the British Isles in this context, it refers to the race that previously inhabited modern-day England and Wales, who spoke a language known as "Brythonic".

Sorry but the Romans named the part that is now England & Wales .... Brittania. The part beyond hadrians wall they called Caledonia that part is now mainly called Scotland. (Hadrians wall runs from Carlisle to Newcastle ... England)

Are we seriously considering 'races'?

I see myself as Scottish & European & i will never refer to myself as "British"
After you split from England, it'll be just like old times.

According to which culturally-constructed racial continuum?
Those people who are telling you that "race" has no basis in biology? They're right. "Race" is purely a culturally-constructed identity, and two groups that may be considered distinct races in one culturally-constructed conception of race, may be considered the same race in another, or vice-versa.

Britannia came from the Brythonic word Pritani. The Irish called the Picts Cruithini, which is almost certainly a cognate (Gaelic Q/C is Brythonic P). Caledonia probably came from the Caledonii, a Pictish tribe. It makes more sense to suggest that the Picts were essentially the Ancient Britons who were not conquered by the Romans, than to suggest that the Picts were a distinct nation beforehand and that the Romans conveniently just stopped where the border between them and the Ancient Britons was (not least since the Romans advanced further at least once during their stay).
