The 2012 phenomenon

Split from the FB&NI topic on the same subject, this is a debate about whether the earth as we know it will come to an end in under a month; the Doomsday theory.

What say you, NSG? Is the 2012 apocalypse stuff that will remain fiction until we're long since dead, or will mile-high tidal waves crash down upon our cities, zombie viruses unleash themselves upon humanity and earthquakes rip apart what's left of the land? Discuss.

(My opinion is spoilered for those interested.)
Personally, I can't see how this holds any degree of truth. The Mayan calendar, which the theory sprung from, was designed to continue after it reached its last day of 21 December, 2012 and continue for another 5,125 years; essentially a version of our own habit of replacing our calendars annually.

It's bullshit.

Yeah it's BS. It will be another day and the Maya would change their calendar.
What will happen on the 21st of December is that winter will start.
I found a video explaining the truth behind the 2012 apocalypse prediction.

If it happens to the French first, I'm fine with the Apocalypse.

THe mayans, Nostradamus, the ancient chinese, the Hindu bible, the southwest native american tribes and NASA all predicted 2012. THey can't all be wrong

It's utter bullshit. Predictions have come and been disproven. It will just be another cold day filled with parents frantically shopping for Christmas presents.

Thank you San Leggera. My topic was getting really spammy, mods are probably going to terminate it soon.

That's six separate entities that you've claimed predict 2012 to be true. Mind providing links to show that they did/do indeed believe that?

The Mayans predicted nothing.
Nostradamus predicted no end of the world in 2012.
The Chinese did not predict the end of the world.
The Hindu Bible? There is no such thing. There are Hindu holy texts, but not a Bible.
Nasa did not predict it
And neither did Native American tribes.

Except in the southern hemisphere.

My favorite doomsday prediction was the huge swarm of locusts that was supposed to engulf us all back in the 23rd century BCE. More recently, there was the "9999" prediction. All computers were supposed to shut down on September 9th, 1999, because, see, "9999" is the universal shutdown code and when the computers saw that date they would al just ... shut down. :p Seriously.

Also NASA didn't say 2012 was the end

It will not happen not for millions of years and by that time the human population would span to other worlds and possibly into the Trillions.

Imagination.

Indeed. There is this, though:

O vast Rome, your ruin approaches,
Will cause its realm to hold in peace and union.
Their enemies will seize the marine city
And great floods when it will be seen.

Nostradamus did predict lots of things I'm pretty sure Nostradamus was a few hammers short of a toolbox as well.

Nostradamus couldn't predict his way out of a paper bag.
