First, it seems like people want the end of the world, then try to find some excuse for it. They then scare people enough that they then look for their own reasons as what might be going on. The most interesting explanation I have heard for the blackout rumors for the 2012 is not very coherent (most aren't).

Basically we are all bots, with our consciences located elsewhere. Somehow our conscience is projected out from the black hole at the center of the galaxy. During the winter solstice this year, there is also an alignment such that the sun will block our connection between our bodies and our conscience. Hence the blackout. Since it is such a sudden disconnect, most will be thrown into a form of sensory deprivation during this downtime.

Yeah, heh, right.

Seriously though. If an asteroid hits the planet you have around a 50% chance of living, depending where the asteroid hits. If it's on the other side of the planet, then congratulations! If it's on your side, BOOM. Instantly vaporized or just dead.

But even if you do live, there will always be the sun blocked out by the ash, lack of plants, animals go extinct and then starvation. And you would have to live through that for thousands or maybe millions of years.

So if an asteroid hits, tough luck, we're done for. But it probably won't happen for a while.
