1) The UN has predicted the decline of European population based on trends dating back to at least 1995. It claims population will decline by 2050 if these trends continue.

2) Consider previous experiences of population decline - such as Rome. What happened when the then-first world declined? Everything else went down the crapper with it. When you don't have people to care for technology and knowledge, it will be lost to less developed, less educated, less civilised countries. (Unless some institution - like the Catholic Church, again - preserves it.)

(PS: Unlike the author of the last article I think it is quite possible for the same to happen to America, if it decides to "Europeanise" its culture.)

Hmm. 3rd world countries, example being half or so of countries in the continent of Africa, tend to have larger and also growing populations. I don't see how 1st world regions are overpopulated; in fact, most of them are experiencing declining population. Also, 1st world countries have the resources and therefore ability to handle and care for their populations adequately. So perhaps half of Africa should stop existing, huh?

What you fail to realize is that constant population growth is not necessarily a good thing, especially when, by doing so, we are crowding other species off the planet. And Europe is not in a "torpor" that it needs to be shaken out of. It's just become a cultural thing that having more children than everyone else is not a sign of societal status. Children are a lot of work to raise and care for, and more and more people are deciding to not have kids so that they can do other things with their lives while they're young, such as travel or dedicate themselves to their business. But of course, there will always be those people that will want to have kids, and there will always be enough of those people to keep the population levels from falling too far. And with seven billion people on the planet, I would say that declining birth rates are very much a cause for optimism. There are too many humans. There need to be fewer of us, especially in places like China and India, given their high population densities (I think that Japan is pretty crowded too, but I could be wrong about that).
