Because in some cultures, men are required to be gentlemenly, and your acts of mental gymnastics define your masculinity. So masculinity being purely about aggressivness and competition is rather odd. And besides, many women are just as competitive and aggressive as men, so I doubt that this is a purely 'masculine' trait.

Modern American definitions of masculinity are significantly less sophisticated than the Ancient Athenian ideals of virtuous men.

I wasn't even really referring to the Athenians, though there are similarities. Iniuts, for example, highly prized (and still highly prize) the ability to on the spot problem-solve, along with mental and physical endurence.
