I'd say focus on educating the children. The main reason that ignorance continues to exist is because we let parents pass their ignorant beliefs unto their children. If we stop that by mandating public, non-religious education then we can cut this off at the head and prevent any future issues with ignorance and lack of education being a problem.

If they wish to secede for an actually-logical reason besides "hurr durr we hate union" then maybe we can work out our differences politically.

Naturally, it's why I pointed out that you were making overtly political suggestions of what to do (well, in one case). Which illustrates the big problem with your stance, it's literally impossible to avoid any political bias in any decision. There's a reason why people lean certain ways.

Take the issue of whether or not to hold elections. The answer that I consider to be right is to keep holding them... that's showing my politics. If someone answered, "No, we should not hold elections" then we gain insight into their politics.

The more realistic solution of whether or not taxes should go up is also politically influenced. The reason being that one's politics affects how one sees something and that's why one's choices are influenced. A right-winger may think taxes should go down. This is to stimulate consumption spending to create growth. A left winger may think that taxes should go up so that the goverment can provide a better education to stimulate sustainable growth. They also view the situation in different lights.
