Libertarianism gets hijacked by religious fundamentalists quite often. Ideologies evolve too, but it ain't always pretty.
CVT Temp wrote:I mean, we can actually create a mathematical definition for evolution in terms of the evolutionary algorithm and then write code to deal with abstract instances of evolution, which basically equates to mathematical proof that evolution works. All that remains is to show that biological systems replicate in such a way as to satisfy the minimal criteria required for evolution to apply to them, something which has already been adequately shown time and again. At this point, we've pretty much proven that not only can evolution happen, it pretty much must happen since it's basically impossible to prevent it from happening.

Evolution is as much a theory as gravity - we know that it works, we just do not know how it works (but still better than we know how gravity works). If we did not know if it works, we would call it a hypothesis.

Yup, depending on how 'micro' you want your micro-organsims. In lab settings, breeding for different traits in different branches of offspring from a single pair of mates (usually worms, flys etc. because their genectic structure is better understood and can produce more obvious differences) has pretty much conclusively shown that sustained breeding pressure for or against various inherited traits can and does lead to branches more than different enough to be classified as different species if found in the wild. I'm not sure if actual speciation (that is, difference in traits to the point where breeding with the other branches fails to produce viable offspring) has ever been documented or not, but environmentally-induced trait adaptation is pretty much impossible to rationally disprove at this point.

We DO know how it works.

1: Evolution is as much a theory as gravity - not at all. They're observations.
2: Evolution by means of natural selection is a scientific theory. That means that it is supported by all available evidence.
3: If we did not know how it worked, we would find out. An observation doesn't become false because we can't explain why it happens.

I am sure that those surviving by landing on top of the pile would try to use that as evidence of god's intervention.

No, everything is tied to ground using string. If you jump from a building, that string is snaps and you die.

Of course. Because anyone lucky enough to survive is special in God's eyes while those who died were just unlucky. It's narcissism at it's finest.
"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."—former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman

No, they aren't. The methods by which they work are theories. Evolution and gravity can be observed, but the methods by which they work cannot be 100% proven.
