There was quite a bit of Math behind it and they had a relative number and it was fairly small within zero zero point ranges ._. You would need a much larger explosive to trigger a ignition of the gasses in the atmosphere they did not know the exact size due to them being unaware of the yield of the device but they ran guess work based upon the Nuclear research and detonations they had used in the past.

All in all i would say that was one of the more thought out expriments using Nuclear weapons to be honest unlike the post war testing (1948-1954) which was completely horrid due to them more or so less running fallout measurement and radiation yield testing on their own people.

Like Japan was not enough evidence as far as such things went but such is the pragmatism of sceince.
