For everyone that keeps saying the election, how exactly is the Obama administration making prices drop?

Also, thanks for ignoring my 3 factual reasons.

Agreed, hard to reelected if everyone is pissed off about gas prices.

Yes, Obama just reached over to the "Gas Price" dial he has on his desk and turned it down a few notches.

Well, in the short term, Hurricane Sandy put off motorist in the New York Metro area for a bit. This caused a sharp drop in demand, which triggered an oil sell off. As the demand drops, so does prices, but this may change very quickly.

In the long term, the US is using less oil than it has in past years. With the proliferation of electric and hybrid vehicles by more and more Americans, and electric plants switching from oil to natural gas, the demand for oil and gasoline in the US has dropped, and with it the prices.

Copenhagen gas station stands empty

Everyone's got an opinion when it comes to gas prices. Here in the U.S., where the average price for a gallon of regular gas has now reached $3.90,--and still climbing-- the onerous price burden falls squarely on the motoring public. And, most of us believe we're already paying enough.

Last month U.S. Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu recently said the nation's goal is not to reduce gasoline prices but to reduce the overall dependency on oil. He reasoned that if gasoline's cost becomes prohibitive, we'll be forced to seek energy from sources other than petroleum.

In 2008 he told the Wall Street Journal: "Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe."

Super is $3.27? That's a damm good price. I don't go to the pump but maybe 3 times a month, but the last I saw, I think super was at least $4 a gallon. As for why, my guess is that it's between the end of summer driving & christmas shipping. In short, a small dip in the market?

Taxes and gasprices

Postby Norsklow » Fri Nov 02, 2012 10:36 am

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/arc ... on/238226/

Americans consider cheap gas a birthright. No wonder we blame Congress when the price of petro creeps toward $4. But compared to most of the developed world, the only thing amazing about $4 gas is that we think $4 gas is amazing.

In most of Europe, four dollars is what you pay for half a gallon of gas or less. Denmark is flirting with $10/gallon thanks to high taxes and expensive fuel transportation. Meanwhile in Venezuela, gas is said to be cheaper than water. To see how the price of gas varies dramatically around the world, click through this gallery (all figures $/gallon):

There is typically a drop in gasoline prices after summer travelling season ends. Oil prices also respond to concerns about the Middle East: in the spring there was concern that Israel and Iran might be at war imminently, and then there was some speculation Netanyahu might launch in October thinking Obama would be forced to back him; but instead Netanyahu has called Israeli elections and won't be in any mood to be frisky until they are over, and Iran has been grudgingly pulled toward negotiations as sanctions begin to bite and the disintegration of Syria weakens their local position; so war fears are down, hence oil prices are down.

I love how everyone is bitching about gas prices. I will admit absolutely that they're ridiculous compared to pre-2007 ones, but Americans don't seem to realize that a). gas prices right now are probably as good as they'll ever get, b). they're also lower than they were four years ago, and c). the prices at the pumps here are almost certainly the lowest in the world.

I'd like to see every American who bitches about $3.30/gal be forcibly sent to Canada for a week, so they would be freakin' grateful about how cheap the black stuff is here.

No. There are many nations were at the pump cost of gasoline is lower. They are subsidized of course.

Probably none with a higher standard of living than the US.

Most first world countries other than the US have a lot of extra taxes on gasoline, and while I understand those taxes usually go to productive things, most Americans don't, and a good portion of people in those other countries don't either.

First and foremost, crude oil reserves are at historically high levels and demand is weak. Secondly:

http://energyforumonline.com/wp-content ... -ratio.png

The crack ratio between gasoline and oil went parabolic and is now reverting back to the mean; that ratio represents the spread between the price for a barrel of gasoline vs. a barrel of oil (i.e. the absolute margin of refining a barrel of oil into gasoline before deducting any associated costs).
