Why is gas dropping?

Postby Yes Im Biop » Fri Nov 02, 2012 9:51 am

Ok not that I'm complaining but currently Super in my town is at $3.27. Thats a 50 cent drop in 2 month's. Why is this? And can we expect it to continue to fall?

EDIT: Super is 3.27, Unleaded is 3.37

Why, I'm not sure. I haven't been following the commodity markets recently. But, no, you can't expect it to continue dropping. In the long run, oil will continue to inflate.

Increased consumption? Increased taxes? You're using more electricity? Depends on where you live and how you live.

And why did you quote me twice?

This, coupled with typical seasonal variations.

What was two months ago (in the US)? Labor Day weekend was upon us. Since then, the "summer driving season" as it's often called has ended.

It'll spike a bit around Thanksgiving as it always does (though as things currently stand it may be--as I've noticed it has a couple of times in recent years--that the "spike" is merely "it stops dropping for a bit").

^^ This. Over the past few years, the bite from the recession has painfully weakened, and the economy is slowly recovering. However, there is still weak consumer confidence (overall) nationwide. Simple supply and demand. There will always be a demand, but until confidence in the economy improves, gas prices will continue to show weak stability no matter what direction they move in.

Except oil is price inelastic. Basically, demand doesn't respond much to changes in price.

Electricity rates vary based on local conditions (taxes, supply, non-oil resources, personal life style choices). Oil prices, on a global scale, have gone down. Comparing the two is "buh-loh-ney".

Here in Italy petrol (95-98 octane rating) has dropped from 1.989 €/l in August to the current 1.785 €/l (prices at the pump at the ENI station closest to my house).
My guess is that prices rise during the summer because of the summer vacations. More people driving long distances, you know.

Btw, side remark, for the first time since WW2 the yearly amount of new bicycles being sold has overtaken the same amount for cars. Cry me a river.

And obviously, you have compared gasoline prices for local conditions, taxes, and so forth, amirite?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/news ... edown.html

This included a $354m charge for writing down older, more expensive shale gas assets in the US following the fall in gas prices due to the abundance of shale gas.

We're not talking about local gasoline prices. You're talking about YOUR electricity prices.

Global gasoline prices have gone down, and it's not because of a large increase in supply or a global tax reduction.

I believe British Scientists found a way to convert air into gasoline.

Not in large amounts, and it won't stay down, but maybe oil companies are having a collective "Oh, shit!" moment.

Why do retailers sell more goods in December?

Right. Gas is also seasonal and the summer driving season is over. Also, retailers have switched to the winter gasoline, which is cheaper. Summer gasoline includes a variety of ingredients, to slow evaporation. Finally, as already has been pointed out, the economy is weak.

We saw a 50 cent drop overnight here. WTI crude has dropped almost 2% today alone.

The Spectator had earlier this year a large expose on filthy tricks that oil companies are pulling to stop the development of alternative sources.

Including FAKING evidence that shale exploration is extremely risky, and homes can blow up without warning.
