Or maybe it's a sign that your mom is a horrible person and an insecure tyrant who feels irrationally threatened by the idea that her son might have opinions of his own.

Don't bring mothers into this.

Also, by bad mouthing I mean cursing, not sharing my opinion. My mother let's me have opinions. In fact, we have different views and know it. But I still get along with her, we have good times, it's not punishments all the time as you would generalize. She's still my parent and I love her, and she loves me. My parents have done numerous things for me, they've practically expended their own lives so that mine would be set. I suggest you stop thinking of my parents as malevolent.

Stockholm syndrome. Simple as that.

If it's "the most effective way to teach a child right from wrong", you have failed as a parent. It's the most effective way to teach kids to avoid being caught, blindly follow whatever parents say and care about consequences instead of actually knowing what right and wrong are.

I never got beaten by my parents.

I never felt they were horrible. I always felt that I had ample time to change my behavior before being spanked and the few times I was spanked I remember being mad enough that I continued to do the behavior knowing I would be spanked. afterwards I was always more sad about making dad sad to have spanked me than about being spanked. it never hurt, was always over my pants and also was a very rare occurence. The slapping the face thing was pretty awful but she felt awful afterwards and I know that I was being REALLY mouthy, I think I even called her a B*tch. SO. yeah. I wouldn't say they were awful at all. I think I was spanked maybe 10 times at most and probably less than that actually from the time I was like 4 til I was about 12
