These are real vintage posters from a time in American history when doctors said smoking doesn't cause cancer. Believing something by authority is dangerous and happens all too often. A scientist says we're warming up the planet, so what? There's another scientist that says we aren't warming up the planet. Of course the environazis completely ignore the "experts" who have a differing opinion. Are you doing your part in reducing global warming? Did you stop driving your car and using electricity?

Yep..I know. And guess what...many of those doctors were paid by the various industry vested interests...as has been shown time and again. Not really science but more an aid to allow industry to continue to create profit.

Given you talk of belief shows you do not understand how science works...hence my comment that you should perhaps learn about science and how it works. For example - it is not a scientist saying that we are warming up the planet, but rather quite a few...in fact a majority of experts in their field. The "scientists" arguing the toss? Well follow the money - Koch Industries, Cato Institute (paid for by the Kochs btw) etc etc...that would be the vested interests scientists....you know...the ones that are in the posters you presented.

Am I doing my part? Probably. And you? Probably not...considering the amount of methane you're producing ;)

I have and unless you cannot speak English, that is essentially what he is saying.

in the case of climate change, the people to be excluded from power are those that deny it exists, deny that humans are the cause, or deny the expected effects without the expertise to do so legitimately.

Essentially he is repeating the same old argument that he always does. People that, in his opinion, aren't "qualified enough" (legitimately criticising something in his opinion means having the qualifications to do so) should be excluded from power by disenfranchisement. That is not respecting other's opinions and I cannot imagine how you missed that.

Just like how Dems. back in the day thought African Americans were way too stupid to vote and too dirty to sit in front of the bus.

you know you've been gone from NSG too long when you're surprised to find that a question answered in the second post is ongoing 10 pages later . . . .

No, we should not disenfranchise people for their beliefs. That has never worked out well in the past and continues to be a fundamentally poor idea (who chooses, for one thing? How do you avoid massive corruption for another, and , more importantly, given that most of us believe something that's not held true by the mainstream, who is going to do the voting?).
Yes, climate change is real. This is scientific consensus and should, therefor, be treated as fact. Does that mean we need to go back to the stone age? no. Does it mean we should be investing more in renewable power, getting over our fear of nuclear power and trying like hell to make sure electric cars/planes/etc. become as viable as possible as quickly as possible? Yes. Also, space.

No, I must thank you for showing NSG that science is often fudged for ulterior motives. Hats off to you!

Funnily enough that is exactly what acting the role of the devils advocate is...arguing a point you don't believe. I think this thread amply shows that there are not two sides to this debate but rather children who have heard big words and the adults who know what those big words mean.

could be? alternately it could be an action flick wherein the two of you overcome your differences via the time honored method of fighting each other/enemies.... either way, it'd make for a great story.

Well at least you admitted it.

On a more serious note, it would actually be true that I was being the Devil's Advocate, purely because I have gone from being a complete skeptic to believing in it and acknowledging mankind's involvement and role in climate change. I just dislike any ideas that infringe on the rights of others and I am deeply fascinated as to why people would like to go to such lengths when the majority of people believe that climate change is occurring and that human activity is entirely or partly responsible for it.

What is the point of disenfranchising a minority of people who don't believe in something when the majority do? It would be like disenfranchising people that believe the Earth is flat.
