Should climate change deniers be disenfranchised?

Postby Franklin Delano Bluth » Tue Oct 30, 2012 3:49 pm

Electoral democracy is not a suicide pact, and it's certainly not an end in itself. Rather, it's a means to ensuring the well-being of humanity, and there should be no hesitation to set it aside when it becomes a hindrance to that end, just as we would set aside a hammer with no compunctions when it comes time to cut a plank in two.

If the climate change deniers continue with their willfull ignorance and obstructionism, well, we are not obligated to let them sacrifice all of humanity for their own short-term private interests. Our lives are more important than their oil revenues. If saving mankind requires removing their access to the political system, should we do it?

And this could easily be used as an argument for banning non-christians from voting. No, we shouldn't disenfranchise people for their beliefs

Congratulations. You have summed up the entire argument against the proposal in one post.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

I personally think so, but such an act would be an infringement on their civil liberties... and do that to one group, there's no stopping it from being applied to more.

Then what do you propose we do, if the climate change deniers continue their stubbornness indefinitely and continue to promote humanity's destruction for their own private interests?

No, it would be an unecessary violation of their rights that would likely backfire spectacularly by giving them more support than they would otherwise would have had.

It may be too late for that to be worthwhile.

Good job man.
You have become a totalitarian.
Either you're a democrat or you aren't, and unless you are advocating for the devil here, it's clear you aren't.
What makes YOUR ideas any better than theirs? If you can't beat them in debate, then that's your problem.

No one ever refuses to be educated.

What we need to do is ban those stupid religious schools that teach our kids the wrong shit. Beef up the public schooling system and get it teaching about climate change as a serious issue, and maybe we'll have a shot at survival.

Don't force them to change their beliefs, just force them to be involved in the 'scientific method' of peer-review rather than agenda fuelled cherry-picking.

Exactly. We don't have an unlimited amount of time. Kids are not infinitely educable, especially if their parents are part of the problem. If push comes to shove, if there's no longer enough time for up to keep trying to educate people, are we seriously supposed to resign ourselves and all humanity to doom simply because people who knew what was going to happen nevertheless insisted on using a hammer to tighten a screw?

I refuse to have humanity survive if it has to do so under tyranny. I'd rather have the ship sink with decency thanks.

I'd rather humanity be forced to face the fruit of their labor and die because they refused to change their ways.

At least then you can't blame anyone. It'll be humanity's own goddamn fault for being ignorant, backwards, and stupid.

Of course I'm not a democrat? Did you not actually read the first post--you know, the one where I explained that electoral democracy is not a first principle, not an end in itself, but a means to the freedom and well-being of mankind that we should not hesitate to set aside when it becomes a hindrance to that end just as we would a hammer when it comes time to cut a plank in two?

Hardly all of the land. :palm:

Edit: and they can adapt, overnight if need be. Just look at people who migrate from one climate to another today.
