"Scrapping of gender titles proposed in Brighton".

Because as far as I can tell, that link states that while the idea has the support of the deputy leader on the council, it hasn't been formally approved, and while a committee has been appointed to set out a series of recommendations on the issue, only one of the latter will involve the total abolition of gender titles.

But I suppose that wouldn't make for such a snappy thread title and OP.

I could see the complaints if they were outlawing the use of gender-specific titles. However, that is very clearly not what they're doing. I don't really see the point of removing them, but I can't say I see any special point in keeping them except that "that's how it has always been done!" And that's really a very good reason.

As long as there's a spot on forms to note "Male" or "Female" (or other, if so desired, I guess), then there's no particular reason to include the titles. It doesn't give any useful information that isn't already given elsewhere. Saves space.

I don't really see the point of having Ms. vs. Mrs. Why is it so freaking important that we know from title whether or not a woman's married? We might as well just use one or the other universally. It doesn't seem that important to anyone to know whether or not a man is married from a title...
