I find the proposal utterly ridiculous. The fact of the matter is that you are male or female, there is simply no discussion. You are born as a male or female and you will be male or female until you die. What the hell to they propose putting on letters instead of 'Mr', 'Mrs' or 'Miss'? The introduction of 'Ms' was bad enough, you're either married or you're not (you're technically still married if you're a widow), there's no middle ground.

What do you think, should we succumb to political correctness once again?

Good on Brighton. The rest of the world would do well to catch up.

The name of the person one is writing to, obviously. But more likely they don't propose anything because removing gendered titles from official forms and what not doesn't mean that it's illegal to use gendered titles.

What? Surely not.
there's no middle ground.

There's also no actual need to attach different titles to people based on their gender or marital status.

Of course you should, and the rest of the world should follow suit.

Ideally there would be an introduction of a gender neutral title which would then be adopted by people who actually care.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

But calling someone 'Mr' or 'Mrs' or 'Miss' is a sign of respect. If a company is writing to me I don't expect to be addressed by my first name, I expect to be addressed by Mr and then my surname.

The introduction of 'Ms' was bad enough, you're either married or you're not (you're technically still married if you're a widow),

No, I don't mean to sound like the Mail but, political correctness has go too far. I don't see why the government feels compelled to please every single minority. They really ought to stop complaining and get on with their lives.

And too those people who are talking about biology. Show me proof that you are not born as a female or male, I want a reputable source. Nothing from Wikipedia or some small medical journal I've never heard of. I'm talking organisations like the W. H. O. or the British Medical Journal or something.

Not that I see it as a big issue anyway, but does it really matter if they are just removing it? Adding Gender titles doesnt exactly benefit anyone...

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.

Which is a reason to come up with a gender neutral honorific, or to accept use of your full name as being respectful. Not to refer to people by their gender and/or marital status.

What? Surely not.

I don't quite understand what this is getting at.

Surely when one's spouse dies, one is no longer married to them, no?

There's also no actual need to attach different titles to people based on their gender or marital status.

Like I've said before, it's a sign of respect.

A sign of respect which does not need to vary by gender and marital status.

Of course you should, and the rest of the world should follow suit.

I guess they feel like they have to do right by all of the people as much as possible, not just the majority.

And too those people who are talking about biology. Show me proof that you are not born as a female or male, I want a reputable source. Nothing from Wikipedia or some small medical journal I've never heard of. I'm talking organisations like the W. H. O. or the British Medical Journal or something.

Show us proof one is born only male or female. Your claim, your burden.

Lol, transsexualism, what's that?

The introduction of 'Ms' was bad enough, you're either married or you're not (you're technically still married if you're a widow), there's no middle ground.

Uh, double standard much? If that's the case, why aren't you campaigning for two titles for men? Why should women have to specify whether they're married or not and men don't?

What do you think, should we succumb to political correctness once again?

I honestly don't see the big deal here. So what if people won't be called Mr/Ms, it's not like that's going to affect anyone's day-to-day lives.
