I don't want to dissolve the Union. But it would be good to see the country decentralized. The Federal government has become much more powerful than the architects of the republic ever intended. It would be better, if the states could decide for themselves how to deal with some of the more divisive social and moral issues. That way, traditionalists, progressives and libertarians could each find a part of the country to call their own, and we could stop fighting over whose policies will govern the nation. I think this would make it easier for Americans of different beliefs to live together.

Some countries, with which the US has had an adversarial relationship, probably wouldn't mind seeing the Union unravel. Other nations would view our dissolution with alarm and trepedition. A few American successor republics might be strong enough to remain big players in global affairs, financially and militarily. But none could hope to have as much influence as the former US.

Roughly speaking, each of us can know 100-300 people. 3 levels of governance seem to be most workable. 3 to 30 million seems to work out to the best population level.

No. 3 levels of government is what you want per region/mega city. You can have another layer of government on top of that no problem. Therefore 1-5 billion seems a sensible size. Unless you're trying to set up a supra-national organization, in which case you could probably get away with 5 layers....

I think it's a certainty that if the US broke apart into several smaller states or for some other reason ceased to play a role in world affairs, some other country or countries would arise to take its place. Those who've resented American influence in the world might find that those who've risen to take our place are just as assertive in claiming dominance, unashamedly promoting their own interests, without any pretense of upholding the American ideals that have inspired so many. A post-American world might not be the cooperative, peaceful planet some have imagined.

He is correct. China's the longest surviving civilization (there were some periods of dramatic decline, but the culture and history was pretty much still retained) mostly because of their history strong centralized rule, a necessity in a region where factional splinters were common.
