Your Favourite class of battleship.

Postby The Federal Republic of Varsal » Thu Oct 18, 2012 1:18 pm

Recently, I was thinking about naval warfare. Chiefly from the early 1900s up to WWII. Well I was thinking about this I started wondering, what are your favourite battleships/battleship classes? I would prefer if you stuck to capital ships IE Battleships, Battlescruisers and heavy cruisers. Don't start about aircraft carriers please. I'll start off.

My favourite classes of battleships/battlecruisers are: HMS Hood ( I know it was sunk quickly but come on it was 30 years old), the Iowa class battleships, and the Queen Elizabeth class battleships.

One other thing, if you want to debate what ship is better, don't compare ships that would obviously be clobbered by there oponent, as in don't compare the Russian cruiser aurora to the USS Missouri

I like the last class of battlecruisers the Germans fielded in WW1, though I can't remember the class name. Big (30cm, IIRC) guns, armor -- even to resist torpedos and mines -- suitably fast. Everything I'd want in a big-gun warship.

Catan's got it rig, the Yamato was the best battleship EVER. It had seaplane ramps of course, but those guns were the scariest sight that could be seen by enemy forces.
btw, this is the enemy reaction :o

N3 Class. Too bad for the London and Washington Naval treaties, the Brits could have crippled their empire even faster if we allowed them to waste so much money building battleships to keep up with Japan and the US.

Yamato's guns weren't much better than American 16in guns, and the Western powers had superior FCS, combine that with the greater speed of the Iowa class and the Yamato would have had a tough time in a head to head battle. Calling it the best EVER is stupid, especially when you consider that the Iowa class after their retrofit in the 80s and the Kirov class could tear it apart with missiles.

No, really, I like the Halcyon-class light cruiser

All right, all right. I'll go to WWII battleships (despite me not being a fan).

The Richelieu class. Shockingly well put-together - it was faster than everything but the Iowa class, was better armored than all the other European ships, and had especially good underwater protection.

It also had the best 15" guns - a recorded firing cycle rivaling the Bismarck, with heavier shells that it lobbed a further distance - and DP 6" secondaries capable of presenting serious anti-cruiser threats. The tertiary anti-aircraft weapons were not initially very good, but that was the case for all WWII battleships, which were upgraded over the course of the war.

It's arguably worse than the American battleships; the six inch DPs were not that good against aircraft, for example, and in the rare event of a battleship-on-battleship duel, the fact it only carried fifteen inch guns would be critical against an opponent fielding sixteen inch guns with a superheavy AP round. And it is not in the same weight class as the Yamato.

However, for something swifter than the South Dakota and North Carolina classes, and substantially smaller than the Iowa class, it's really quite impressive; the best battleship of the European powers.

What about them? Germany hasn't been a naval power since WW1.

Agreed, the Yamato's guns weren't as good as they looked on paper due to the poor ballistics of the shells, whereas the Iowa had very good shells which further negated the Yamato's theoretical advantage. Also, the Yamato's armor wasn't very good either, its only advantage there being that it was very thick.

Head-to-head in their original configurations, I would pick an Iowa over a Yamato in a fight, primarily (as you just mentioned) due to the fact that the Iowa could use her speed to maintain maximum distance between the two ships and exploit the advantage of her superior fire control radar.
