Maybe we can make a rival movie for Americans to drool over. Something with the memorable quote of- "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our unity as a Constituent Country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as per the Acts of Union 1707........." :unsure:

Yeah, I have a hard time what the SNP want. I saw their leader interviewed a while ago and he was saying stuff like the pound would still be the national currency and the Queen still the head of state. Scotland already has its own parliament, education system etc so I have a hard time figuring out what is left to be independent from if they aren't wanting to ditch the Windsors or the pound. :eyebrow:

Anyway, I'm English and I say if it's what the majority wants let them have it. I'm a Republican myself, so I'd be happy if we got one step closer to undermining the credibility of a monarchist system (even if the royals are a symbolic husk of what they once were) and moved towards proper democracy. Plus, I assume Scotland would still be in the EU, as would England & Wales, so I could still nip across the boarder unharassed to spend time in my favourite countryside in the world.

No. It's a vote to have our government decided for us by Southern England once every 5 years. ;)

That so?

I personally do not care, although personally I would find it better if we were all one giant empire and not divided up like this.

i think all salmond wants is all the oil to himself and full control over the "scottish" military and a small stockpile of Nukes that would be split fairly upon independance

Not for the purposes of whether Scotland's government is decided by Southern England. Unless Londoners are secretly electing MSPs.

Unless Scotland leaves the Commonwealth, gaining independence doesn't in any way insinuate removing the monarchy; they'll be like Canada or Australia.

The Scots I know and regularly speak to do not want independence, from what I gather the SNP only got voted in because the Scots were fed up with Labour and they're never ever gonna vote Tory in a thousand years.

I'm having a hard time seeing what benefits the Scots will get if they leave the Union, I certainly do not see what the SNP sees;

*Free university places and free prescriptions for Scots:- How are they going to fund this when the cash flow from London stops and without raising taxes?

*North Sea Oil:- Around 90% or so of this actually comes ashore in England and only one of the UK's 9 oil refineries is located in Scotland, plus its running out.

*Scotland, the new port of Europe:- Not kidding here.

*Scotland will get all the bases and military assets north of the border:- Its doubtful that there will be any bases left in Scotland by 2014 as it is and the MoD sure as hell isn't going to be giving away its stuff with all the budget cuts that are being forced upon it.

Hmm. Those are slightly worrying motivations. >.<
Wanting oil is understandable, but its not much of a long term commodity.

For the moment yes. Yet, there is a very small gap between the number of supporters and those who do not support independence. That could change soon.

Unlikely to happen. Too many people oppose it, and there's little to be gained.

Do please explain how the devolved Scottish parliament is a government decided by Southern England once every 5 years. I would think that it's decided by Scotland, but maybe somehow that doesn't count as a government because devolution? Are the powers devolved to Scotland not government-y enough?
