What about in total population as opposed to per capita? ;)

Is that done per capita, probably not.

And isn't it interesting that with all those issues we still managed to be a world Superpower, that must because that list totally omits that data in other more repressive nations may be manipulated and that it doesn't point out all of Americas virtues, but hey you know unfair bias against the U.S. is nothing new...

As an American citizen, I am willing to admit, we are home to some of the most idiotic, self centered, hypocritical and self conceited people on the planet. We were once great in our own right, but those days have long past us. What you see are religious nutjobs, rapists, murderers, greedy politicians and corporate entities. I am ashamed to call myself an American, because first and foremost, I am not an idiot like the average American. And if any American nutjob nationalists want to call me unpatriotic just because I speak the truth, well, if being patriotic means being 1.) idiotic, 2.) passively accepting all the propaganda the Gov't shoves down your throat, then I am glad to be label un-patriotic

Dunno how far libraries are in US but around here, they are at half an hour walk at most.

Arumdaum wrote:Tutors are an additional asset, and can help people study. The poor lack that asset.

I just finished GCSE (yr 11), never went to tutors or after-school academies or Saturday school and somehow magically got quite good grades.

after-school academies or Saturday schoolAnd that reminds me; the rich can afford to buy books; the poor can only borrow them temporarily. Many schools, being poorly funded, don't allow students to take home their textbooks, or use online textbooks. Not to forget how painful it would be to bring textbooks back home every single day.[/quote]
Borrow it and photocopy it; most schools should do that for free. Even if they dont, photocopy shouldn't cost more than 4 pence per page.

Not the most important one.

No.
Friends are only competition: and if your friends are in crap situation as well, that's a bonus. Less competition in the future.

Cool, thats a concious and free choice an individual makes.

Depends on the degree you do. Get a high-demand degree, and then a good carrier.
Then, pay back the loan.

No. This is one of the few things people say on here that legitimately pisses me off.
It'd hardly have the right to call itself the USA anymore if the country kicked us out, since the South includes 5 of the original 13 states, not counting those states formed out of other states that were founding members of the Union.
Also, Washington would never go for it, considering where the Mason-Dixon line is.

I say

Its a little early to make this assumption just yet.

I would say Rome but that was more a State becoming an Empire spanning around "500'' years  and they did it on their own terms

China dates back as far as 2000BC and the USA owes them over $1 trillion in debt

It pains me to say, but in my opinion England is the greatest nation on earth. Markers 1 and 2.

1.The USA speaks English along with approx another 950 million other people. (1100 people speak Chinese) and,

2. English law is the basis of American law

These are just 2 reasons to suggest that the USA is NOT the greatest nation in the world but there are many many others. Dont get me wrong though, The US is definantely a huge and predominant influence on the world at the moment but that is wanning due to the widespread economic recession you greedy mongrels started. Big boy on the block? Yes :) Greatest nation in the world? Give it at least another 500 years :)
