Good. So we've decided.
I'm going as an Indian Brave. I'll probably do the war chant as well.

It's not okay. I might be a white, American girl with no culture to speak of, but that doesn't mean that I can't say, "hey, reconsider that costume because it's fucking insensitive."

Indeed.

Hey speak for yourself. I've met plenty of White American women with plenty of 'culture'.
I'm pretty sure every race other than hypothetical robo-people has culture.

Planning to wear a Superman shirt under my button up white shirt, necktie, and suit. Add a black fedora and my usual horn-rimmed glasses, unbutton the shirt a bit, and I'm Superman caught mid-change.

Hopefully it won't be seen as racist against Kryptonians.

99% of people don't even know what racism means, so by all means dress up as you see fit.
If you want to see real racism, go to Russia. The Neo Nazis there will jump an immigrant and beat him to a pulp just because of his race. Not this fake racism where making a black joke equates you to Hitler.

Sad but true.
These PC police could really use some perspective.

Wait... is dressing up as a ninja racist against Japanese people?

Also, to avoid a double standard this campaign must have an ad complaining about people of non-European descent dressing as knights in armor.

I have to admit though... that "Indian" costume and the "black gangsta" costume were poor decisions.

Russian plane tickets are expensive.

Just go to East St. Louis and you get the same brand of Neo-Nazi, plus you can actually understand what they're saying.

Circular reasoning. Try again, and this time, try to prove "x = y" without using the statement "x = y".

Soviet Union wasn't communist.

And the US isn't capitalist, but that is the terminology used by both nations.

False equivalence. The US is a society organized around the needs of capital, in which capitalists (holders of capital) control the means of production. The USSR was not a society organized around the needs of labor for very long (maybe a handful of years, before the Bolshevik government crushed the soviets and repressed the Kronstadt uprising), and by the time the US and USSR were enemies, the USSR was not a society in which laborers controlled the means of production. Nor was the USSR a classless or stateless society, nor organized toward that aim (for very long); to the contrary, it privileged a small band of elite orthodox revolutionaries and apparatchiks who became a "New Class" defended by the regime. It is not without good reason that communist critics of the USSR typically identify it as a 'state capitalist' regime.

The Communist Party may be in power in China (etc), but hey, the Democratic Party is in power in the US, and that doesn't make it a democracy all of a sudden.

Indeed, it's important to recognize that racism is a more visceral problem in Russia, where Nazi violence targets not only racial minorities per se, but anarchist actions like Food Not Bombs. (BTW, is there anything lower than attacking Food Not Bombs?) However...

Not this fake racism where making a black joke equates you to Hitler.

Your inability to comprehend the distinction between individual and institutional racism is not everyone else's fault, nor does it imply that others completely lack perspective on racism.

Delanshar wrote:Sad but true.

How terribly ironic that you compare your debate opponents to the organized force of the state in the same breath as you claim we lack perspective. You wanna see "PC police"? Again, for perspective, look in Russia's history (or Germany's for that matter).

And I don't even understand the one for the black woman. Are they stereotypically targeted by vampires?

This is coming across as oversensitivity, to me at least. How far does it go? Obviously there are no ye olde Victorians around these days, but would it still be disrespectful to dress up in flouncy ye old clothes?

Edit: wait, is the black woman's one meant to be that she's slathered in phat bling (i.e. one sadly obnoxious necklace)?

I pretty much agree with this.

The black woman's one isn't actually a black woman's one. It's a Lil'Wayne one specifically, so that's completely inoffensive as well.

At least two, actually, and they're reintroducing more of them as the reboot continues. And any of them could kick my ass. Maybe I should rethink my idea.

Of course, it is an appropriate and meaningful comparison, because as we all know, black people (substitute Latinos, Southern whites, etc.) exist only in cartoons. Like Superman, they are fictional and cannot experience oppression; therefore, they must be manufacturing fake outrage for political purposes.

My first point is that I don't celebrate Halloween. I'm not a Pagan, and if I want sweets I shall go and buy them instead of knocking on some strangers door and threaten them.

Secondly, IT'S JUST A COSTUME. I don't see why everything has to be so politically correct, it's just a bloody costume. If some black person dressed up as a white person I wouldn't demand that they take it off and call them racist because I really don't care. It's a free country. Likewise, if somebody came up to me and starting denouncing my race or culture then I really wouldn't care. And then, it's always a minority of people that complain. I'm sure the majority of people from other races really don't care how a few people dress up for Halloween. People who constantly bitch about this kind of thing really irritate me, I just don't understand why they can't get on with their lives. Of course, if you're being lynched by the Ku Klux Klan or whatever they're called, that's different. But it's just a Halloween costume, some people really do need to grow up.

Because some people don't understand what fun is, and if everybody can't join in on the fun then we have to ban the whole thing. Hell, I'm a minority, if someone dresses up as a Jewish Person and starts going "Oh the holocaust. Oh anne frank, oh gafilta fish," etc. I'd laugh at their stupidity and ignorance and probably make fun of them in return. It might just be that as a Jewish person I've been exposed to so many stereotypes about my own people, that I literally can't give a shit. My Bank Balance on Fucks was all withdrawn a long time ago, so I can't give any out.

But that's okay, because Jews are white. Anyone of color is similarly coddled with people walking on egg shells. I've been called 'kike' 'thief' 'money grubber' etc. more times by a person of color more than I've ever experienced anything by a white person. I'm not going to go and say "obviously that means all brown people are bad." However, I've found the whole situation of "If your white, you should feel guilty that your more successful than anyone else" and "If your brown, your entitled to complain anytime you face anything you remotely think is discrimination."
