More practically, the British Medical Journal has a long article discussing the debunking of Wakefield's hoax called "How the case against the MMR vaccine was fixed".

The Lancet paper was a case series of 12 child patients; it reported a proposed “new syndrome” of enterocolitis and regressive autism and associated this with MMR as an “apparent precipitating event.” But in fact:

* Three of nine children reported with regressive autism did not have autism diagnosed at all. Only one child clearly had regressive autism
* Despite the paper claiming that all 12 children were “previously normal,” five had documented pre-existing developmental concerns
* Some children were reported to have experienced first behavioural symptoms within days of MMR, but the records documented these as starting some months after vaccination
* In nine cases, unremarkable colonic histopathology results—noting no or minimal fluctuations in inflammatory cell populations—were changed after a medical school “research review” to “non-specific colitis”
* The parents of eight children were reported as blaming MMR, but 11 families made this allegation at the hospital. The exclusion of three allegations—all giving times to onset of problems in months—helped to create the appearance of a 14 day temporal link

This ^ and even if they do cause autism what's worse? Some autistic kids or an epidemic of an easily preventable disease caused by people freaking out over vaccines.

As an autistic adult, I recommend we take the "some autistic kids" route. (Or at least a compromise in that direction). If vaccines gave me autism, that just makes me like them more. Parents who insist on demonizing our condition, or portraying it as a form of victimhood, are part of the problem, and are often quick to expose their bigotry against people with neurobiological differences. (I don't think the OP or anyone I've read in the brief part of the thread I saw is one of these, just to be clear.)

As far as medical victimization goes, I'm far more concerned about current efforts by "Autism Speaks", "Canary Party" and other pro-genocide organizations to "cure" us. Their success so far is depressing and scary. Depressing, because if even Hitler could be convinced to spare autistic children, and our society fails to rise to that incredibly low standard, it will indicate either an incredible bigoted cruelty or, more likely, a refusal to listen to autistic adults. Hopefully our civil rights will be recognized some day, but I'm not that hopeful anymore. I'd settle for putting the last nail in behaviorism's coffin (then setting it on fire).

Anyways, I've heard from actual doctors that the theory that vaccines may cause autism is very insufficient and scientifically unsupported, as the doctor who originally conducted the study that proposed that theory was getting paid to try to persuade people that vaccines might be causing such behavior.

In other words, I call bullshit.
