Its interesting but i think the russians and the ukrainians just found a way to get some easy cash and pawn the thing off, i dont think it would really be that effective for now, maybe in the future when they have it fully outfitted and crewed.

But i hear it is mainly being used as a training hub for when china plans to build its own carriers so their people have some experience on how to run and maintain a carrier but kudos for china just for getting one out there.

Nonsense.

They bought it because they need a base model from which to

  • Develop doctrines via practical experience
  • Learn how to run one in the first place
  • Run it for a few years, make huge lists of problems that need to be solved, and solve them with their first generation of indigenous carriers
Instead of throwing billions into building a wholly indigenous carrier from scratch, which'll inevitably have a million issues simply on account of lacking experience, they're buying an old one for cheap, have their first learning experiences with that one, and can thus make their first domestically produced carrier be actually useful, rather than experimental. It's the cheap, quick, and all-around efficient way to do it.

In short, China is doing it right.

Not sure how the car argument applies anyways... There's some differences between making a car and making a nuclear carrier...

I sure that Japan is delighted that America is prepared to confront China militarily in order to protect Japan's sovereignity over the Senkaku islands.

just as soon as some in america tells them anyway.

The US is obligated to do so under the terms of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. And considering Obama's strategic reorientation towards the Pacific, we can be pretty sure that he knows.

Both are complex engineering and manufacturing endeavors.

And the history of car manufacturing shows how nations can catch up to "state of the art" in a much shorter timeframe, than it took to create "state of the art" in the first place.

My point is that this carieer today is useless, in 25 years this carrier is the first step in giving china the ability to build a fully operational carrier battle groups, that if not force project to the ameican shores, but certainly project chinese interests in the western pacifc, and indian oceans.
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.

Especially with India engaging in its own buildup as well as extant pressure from the various nations surrounding it.

China likely won't muscle the Indians around in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy is further along with their own carrier aspirations.

the point of the carrier is that it allows them to train on a scale the couldn't previously.

I am sure there are ton's of military contractors creaming their pants at the idea that china will either be building a new series of larger class vessels, or will be buying and refitting a new series of larger vessels.

If i was chinese i would be worried about corruption, who knows they might build a class of sub's with screen doors.

Most Chinese actually do worry about corruption, many regard public officials, usually the more local ones, in a negative light, especially online.

But on topic, people have already shared my thoughts on this, and warhawks saying that "this matters a lot" is exaggerating the veracity of the PLAN at the moment. China's still focused on self-defense, their blue-water navy isn't huge, and they're more concern, as a nation, over economics than warfare. fanboys ahoof, but alas, no cake for the hungry.

Bought from Russia in 1998.

Just finally refurbished in 2012.

I think the Chinese will do that themselves.
