They bought it because they need a base model from which toInstead of throwing billions into building a wholly indigenous carrier from scratch, which'll inevitably have a million issues simply on account of lacking experience, they're buying an old one for cheap, have their first learning experiences with that one, and can thus make their first domestically produced carrier be actually useful, rather than experimental. It's the cheap, quick, and all-around efficient way to do it.
- Develop doctrines via practical experience
- Learn how to run one in the first place
- Run it for a few years, make huge lists of problems that need to be solved, and solve them with their first generation of indigenous carriers
In short, China is doing it right.

QFT.
everyone who is measuring chinese military capacity against the US really needs to stop and start measuring it against its regional neighbors.
I imagine South Korea, thailand, vietnam, japan and taiwan don't draw much comfort from american military superiority.

Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea most certainly do.

The US is obligated to do so under the terms of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. And considering Obama's strategic reorientation towards the Pacific, we can be pretty sure that he knows.

I am sure there are ton's of military contractors creaming their pants at the idea that china will either be building a new series of larger class vessels, or will be buying and refitting a new series of larger vessels.
If i was chinese i would be worried about corruption, who knows they might build a class of sub's with screen doors.
