It's a big deal because it's a buttress for Chinese national pride, in the same way that the Americans getting to the moon was. Practically speaking, the carrier is irrelevant. They won't be using it - ever, probably. The Chinese care because they want to be powerful, the West cares because most of us have decided China will eat our babies, countries in the area care because we'll probably see a ramping-up of Chinese belligerence... and that's about it.

A Kuznetsov Class carries like 15 fixed wing aircraft and they have one of them.

A Nimitz carries 60-70 and we have 10.

It's not some turning point in China's military potential. Their only military force worth discussion is the army. Their AF and Navy are still pitiful. A single ship that can launch planes does not remove this status from either.
