How do I start a physical micronation?

Postby Somalistein » Sun Sep 16, 2012 8:39 pm

Alright, so I understand that I can use any amount of property, anywhere, including my house. I have read a (possible skeptic and theoretical) website on Wikidot called "A New Land" and if I achieve this goal, can I also theoretically declare independence? I'm not really expecting the odds to work in my favor though.

Save yourself a lot of futile effort and give up.

Then, what's the point of people starting these sorts of pet projects at all? I mean, there's one in the US city of Pittsburgh called New America.

I think it involves revolution, but I wouldn't recommend that.

There isn't a point unless you want to be harassed by local, state and federal officials and like to waste lots and lots of time and money.

True micronations should be prepared to be cut off from water, electricity, police, fire services since they are independent and should be set up for these anyways.

All you need is a flag, make a flag and plant in the ground, no one can argue with a flag.

Gotcha. What if I wanted to start a village/town/city (hell no, it'll be no bedroom community as I plan)?

Yes technically your committing treason doing that. I think if you want to carve a little nation out a bigger one, be prepared for the consequences (like getting crushed by police and troops).

go ahead. you'll have to find some barren unused land likely in the middle of nowhere and you'll have to find people who want to invest millions if not tens of millions of dollars to set up infrastructure. then, if you gain enough people, perhaps your state will incorporate your village into a city some decades or centuries down the road, if you have enough people move in to your new desert paradise.

good luck!

If it's just you then a flag alone suffices, if you want to bring more people in then you need passports. Prepare yourself with some cardboard, paper and creative drawing skillz.

Damn, that sucks. No, really, sometimes it actually bugs me that nobody is able to grow a nation, whether from an existing one, or from scratch. This isn't a commitment or anything, I was just asking curiously.

Yes, or try and campaign independence from an already existing local government.

Get some friends.

Buy some seeds and get some animals.

Go out into some habitable area that hardly anyone will find out about and establish a settlement.

Well, starting a new local settlement from scratch will add possible jobs and add stewardship to already-existing communities.;)

I would buy large swathes of land. Then invest in it to prepare for self-sufficiency. Then declare independence.

What type of settlement are we talking about? If it's a country, you can't be serious about that sort of thing? I have an idea that anyone can theoretically declare independence, but what about revolution, or are there alternatives?

I don't know. I wouldn't pursue this idea, there isn't really a point in doing it other than the fact that it sounds cool.

Although, you can always ask Peter Griffin
