It's a combination of deliberate ignorance and zealoted skewed fundamentalism, endemic to all faiths, period.

The only thing preventing what is happening in Egypt and Tunisia and Yemen from happening in the US if the same kind of deliberately incendiary video was made to offend evangelical christians is the fact that the police are more numerous, have better riot gear, and our courts can find devious ways to keep people in jail.
